EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 19, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo hung tough with opponents Gannon and McKendree Saturday, but in most circumstances were one step behind the competition. The Golden Knights and Bearcats pulled away late to claim victory during the first day of Mercyhurst's Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite.
Rebecca Valentine blazed the offensive trail for the Mount, scoring nine goals on the day and a career-high six in the McKendree game.
Serena Thurman was the second multiple scorers with three goals across both games.
Valentine also drew eight exclusions and stole five balls against the Bearcats.
Ana Luisa Cotta and
Lauryn Thomas registered multi-assist efforts in the finale.
Hannah Keyser minded the net for the Mount, earning 11 saves on the day.
In both contests the Mountaineers were within one goal at halftime. Gannon outscored the Mount 7-3 in the second half, and McKendree upped the Emmitsburgers 6-4 in the final 16 minutes.
Two more games await Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, playing Salem and Mercyhurst.
