EMMITSBURG, Md. (December 8, 2022) – Former Mount St. Mary's and Pittsburgh Pirates minor-league left-handed pitcher Trey McGough was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of yesterday's Triple-A Rule 5 Draft.
In all likelihood, the selection secures McGough a spot on the Norfolk Tides, Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate.
The Johnstown, Pa. native and Ferndale Area High School graduate was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24
th round of the 2019 after graduating from the Mount. After sitting out 2020 due to Covid-19, McGough has since played High-A for Greensboro, Double-A for Altoona, and Triple-A for the Indianapolis Indians. McGough pitched 17.2 innings for the Indians, where he recorded 13 strikeouts and a 1-0 record.
Trey McGough, through five seasons with the minor leagues, posted a 19-21 record and a 4.58 ERA. He averages 5.19 runs allowed per nine innings, pitching 91 total games, starting 54, finished six out of the bullpen, and pitched one complete game.
In McGough's final season with the Mount in 2019, he started 12 games and tallied a record of 3-4. He led the team in innings pitched (68.1), strikeouts (60), ERA (4.74), and opposing batting average (.290). Ranking seventh in the Northeast Conference in strikeouts, McGough was named to the All-NEC Second Team.
For the program in general, there are four alumni playing professional baseball.
Jordan Geber signed with the New York Mets, competing for St. Lucie and Binghamton. Brady Fiegl and Vaughan Parker II play in independent leagues.
