Bowling Finishes Fourth with Highest Team Average at Bud Whitman Memorial

New Castle, Del. (October 9, 2022) – Despite having the highest team average in the field across two days of competition, the Mount Bowling team had to settle for a 6-4 overall record and fourth place finish at the Bud Whitman Memorial in New Castle (DE) this weekend.

The tournament used a rare win/loss record format to dictate overall standings, opposed to the traditional total pin fall measure. Due to this, the Mount find themselves in a battle for third and fourth entering position round opposed to being in the championship match.

Entering Sunday with a 3-2 record, the ladies took down Chestnut Hill, Pitt Greenburg and Howard to collect three more wins. Freshman Trishelle Leal Uribe was sensational off the bench, posting a team high 21.08 baker frame average, Freshman Aliza Shirk and junior Alyssa Alexander also eclipsed the 20.00 baker frame mark with frame averages of 20.83 and 20.31, respectively. Shirk and senior Barbara Hawes were also recognized at the awards ceremony as All-Tournament Team selections for their performance in traditional play Saturday.

#11 Mount: 881 | Chestnut Hill: 864

The Mount was able to hold on to a win despite their lowest set of the weekend against Chestnut Hill. A solid 205-146 game one advantage would prove pivotal in holding onto the win.

#11 Mount: 935 | Wilmington: 939

Holding a 41-pin advantage entering the final game, 2022 NCAA tournament participant and East Coast Conference Champions Wilmington made a furious comeback edging the Mount 246-201 in the final game to drop the ladies to 1-1 on the day.

#11 Mount: 1,043 | Pitt Greenburg: 768

It was not pretty to start, but after some roster substitutions the Mount used a 246 game three and near program record 287 game five to eclipse the 1,000 mark in a win over Pitt Greenburg. The 287 featured the first ten strikes before the bid for 300 was ended by a 3-6-10 spare combination in the 11th shot.

#11 Mount: 1,109 | Howard: 749

The only 1,100 in the field was rolled in the last round of qualifying against Howard by the Mountaineers thanks to games of 235, 240, 197, 226, and 211.

#11 Mount: 3 | #12 Delaware State: 4

In a one round best-of-seven fight for third and fourth place, the Mount entered as the four seed against the third seeded Hornets of DSU. In a pair that featured a far easier left lane than right, neither team would lose on the left until the Hornets clinched the victory 4-3 thanks to having lane choice.

"When we look at this weekend, we will be pleased with our total pin fall and disappointed with the win loss record," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "We know from an average perspective we were the best team in the field, but in our sport with metrics focused on RPI we need to find a way to translate that into more wins. I am proud of group for the fight, but we need to learn sooner than later how to close the door in tight matches. Aside from our last match where DSU got lane choice on a pair of two different lanes, we really felt it was our self-inflected wounds that costs us the other three matches. We look forward to correcting these flaws at practice ahead of our home tournament."

Wilmington would end up winning the tournament over Molloy in the championship finals. The Mount will be back in action Oct. 15-16 when the host the Mount Shootout at Sunshine Lanes in Waynesboro, PA.
