EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 6, 2022) – The fifth season of competition for Mount St. Mary's bowling begins this weekend, as the Mount travels to again participate in the Bud Whitman Memorial.
COMPETING TEAMS
Chestnut Hill (hosts), Mount St. Mary's, Holy Family, Delaware State, Wilmington, Caldwell, Coppin State, Pitt-Greensburg, Molloy, Howard, Kutztown
SETTING THE SCENE
Mount St. Mary's is coming off an 85-40 season with trips to both national tournaments. Ranked 11
th at the final National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll for 2021-22, the team maintained its position with an 11
th place ranking to open this year.
2022-23 serves as a transitionary moment for the team, as many members of the inaugural class graduating last spring. This past June,
five new bowlers entered the program – four from all over the country and
Trishelle Leal Uribe, the program's first international signee.
Among the returners,
Alyssa Alexander and
Amanda Yeung hold the most prolific résumés. Graduate student
Barbara Hawes and sophomore
Rachel Hines will also be relied upon to make an impact.
Bud Whitman is the first of 11 regular season tournaments for the Mount this year. Highlights include a trip to the International Training and Resource Center (ITRC) for the Prairie View A&M Invite and the annual Stormin' Blue & White Vegas Classic in Nevada.
FORMAT
What was in past years two separate tournaments is now a two-day event. Saturday is five traditional matches beginning at 11 a.m., and Sunday starts with four Baker matches. Standings through the first nine games determine the opponent in Game 10 – a best-of-seven Baker. The top two teams entering the final match have a chance at the title.
THE FIELD
The Mountaineers have previous histories with all but one of the opponents, that team being Holy Family. Kutztown and Coppin State are the most common foes at 16 previous meetings each. As a total coincidence, the Mount is 15-1 against both squads. According to the NTCA poll, Delaware State is in all likelihood the toughest challenger with a 12
th place position entering the year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's hosts the Mount Shootout October 15
th and 16
th at Sunshine Lanes in Waynebsoro, Pennsylvania.
