EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 4, 2022) – Twice this week, Mount St. Mary's men's water polo faces off against Johns Hopkins University. The first of the two meetings will take place Wednesday in Baltimore.
MOUNT UPDATE
Last weekend the Mount traveled to California for the Gary Troyer Tournament, going 2-2. Wins included an 11-9 score over Biola and a 24-13 triumph over La Verne, where the team tallied season highs for steals (30) and assists (21).
With 262 goals over 601 attempts, Mount is scoring at a rate of 44 percent. A couple of players crossed into double figures for goal scoring over the weekend, bringing that number to eight athletes.
Tommaso Baldineti maintains his firm lead of goals and assists for the team. At 83 scores and 45 aids for 128 points, Baldineti involves himself on almost 49 percent of the Mount's goals.
However, the Mountaineers do not need to solely rely on the sophomore to score. In the one contest Baldineti was out with a mild injury, the team defeated Mercyhurst 17-13 with seven players registering goals.
SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
Hopkins enters the game at 7-11 with a 2-3 start in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo play. Emerson Sullivan is head of the Blue Jays for goals and points with a respective 56 and 68. Dado Soares leads in assists with 30, and Kyle Pearson logged 161 of the team's 166 saves.
Also competing at Gary Troyer, JHU went 0-4 with defeats at the hands of Whittier, La Verne, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Competing against each other for the first time in 2021, the Mount and JHU squared off three times during the year. The Mountaineers won the opener 15-14, with Hopkins taking the second game 13-12 and the conference tournament game, 9-7.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The 2022 home opener takes place Saturday (Oct. 8) with games against George Washington and the rematch with Johns Hopkins.
