WAYNESBORO, Pa. (October 16, 2022) – Going a perfect five-for-five Sunday, Mount St. Mary's bowling captured their home tournament for the third consecutive year. Matching the 2021 record, the Mount went 9-1 over two days during the 2022 Mount Shootout at Sunshine Lanes.
A trio of freshmen continued to step into their roles and a quartet of upperclassmen kept their steady presence, switching in and out of the lineup. Junior
Alyssa Alexander led the way with a 21.06 Baker frame average and freshman
Trishelle Leal Uribe added a 20.04. Freshman
Sierra Calo (19.86), sophomore
Rachel Hines (19.44) and senior
Amanda Yeung (19.08) all posted solid efforts on the day. Late in the day, freshman
Aliza Shirk received some playing time in the anchor position, helping the team put the finishing touches on the undefeated effort.
Before competition began, the team honored its senior class. Yeung and
Nichole Lewis received recognition as true seniors, along with junior
Kristin Womeldorf who is on track to earn an undergraduate degree in three years. Fifth-year bowler
Barbara Hawes was also honored as a member of the inaugural class taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility.
#11 Mount: 940 | Howard: 804
After a near record setting performance against the Bison to end Saturday, MSM rematched with Howard to open Sunday. Beginning with a 204, the home side built a 45-pin lead and managed to stay ahead of the pack. Consistent games in the 180's aided the cause.
#11 Mount: 1078 | #12 Delaware State: 847
A 243-146 first game was the spark needed to lift the Mount over the Hornets for the first time this season. Thoughts off a big comeback got repeated denials as an average of 215.6 kept the margin well within a comfortable zone. Delaware State's closest challenge was within 25 pins on the final 10 frames, long after the match had been decided.
#11 Mount: 1036 | Pitt Greensburg: 755
Continuing their momentum after the big win, the Mount rolled past the Bobcats. A Sunday high score of 259 came in the fifth contest and a 236 total in game three bolstered the pinfall further.
#11 Mount: 923 | Felician: 692
Pinfall and the victory over Delaware State put the Mountaineers in top shape to take the title by this point. Still the team pulled together two games over 200 to cruise past the Golden Falcons. Felician did make proceedings interesting for a time with a 164-138 game two.
#11 Mount: 942 | Coppin State: 900
Some early splits by the Mount allowed the Eagles to snare the opening lead. But a 222, 192 and 193 in succession proved more than enough, building out of the deficit by the third game and never looking back on the way to an undefeated session.
"Every day has been better than the last four days into the competition season." Head Coach
Kenneth DeGraaf said. "We were finally able to see that hard work payoff with a 5-0 day and tournament championship. We are far from a finished product, but we have reached a point where we look more confident filling frames and are able to elevate our game when it matters most. It was great to see Alyssa lead a trio of Mount Bowlers on the All-Tournament team as our seniors got the sendoff they deserved. If we can keep improving over the next two weeks, I think we can shock a lot of people in Long Island with what I consider our most balanced team to date."
Off from competition next weekend, Mount St. Mary's returns to the lanes for the Dezy Strong Invite October 28
th to the 30
th in Coram, New York.
