WAYNESBORO, Pa. (October 15, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's women's bowling outpaced the field in total pinfall by nearly 400 pins Saturday at the Mount Shootout, posting a 4-1 record in their five traditional matches.
Junior
Alyssa Alexander led the field individually in large part thanks to a 276 game five that saw the first ten strikes go down. Alexander had a five-game series of 1,054 in route to a 210.8 average. Freshmen
Aliza Shirk and
Trishelle Leal Uribe were the next two highest individual finishers with total pin-falls of 1,021 (204.2 average) and 985 (197.0 average), respectively. Senior
Amanda Yeung (940, 188.0 average) just missed the cut for all-tournament team, while freshman
Sierra Calo (618, 206.0 average) was huge off the bench in the final three games.
#11 Mount: 943 | Coppin State: 877
In a match that was closer than the final score indicated, the Mount held off a continuously improving Coppin State squad to start the weekend 1-0. Leal Uribe (205) and Freshman
Laney Wells (201) led the way.
#11 Mount: 931 | Felician: 759
With conditions remaining tight, the Mount used a 204 from Leal Uribe and a 203 from Alexander to cruise to a 2-0 start with their victory over Felician.
#11 Mount: 1,012 | Pitt-Greensburg: 747
The Mount became the first team to cross the 1,000 plateau, recording a 1,012 in their victory over Pitt-Greensburg. Shirk paced the team with a 224, while Calo inserted herself into the lineup with a 213. Yeung also went for 207 in the victory.
#11 Mount: 943 | #12: Delaware State: 984
Two pocket 7-10 splits in the tenth frame came at an inopportune time for MSM, as both Calo and Shirk had a double entering the final frame. The tough luck break made the Mount pay for earlier mistakes in another narrow defeat to the Hornets this season.
#11 Mount: 1,144 | Howard: 781
Eager to gain a total pinfall advantage over the Hornets following their loss, the Mount took out their frustrations on Howard to the tune of a season high 1,144 set. Alexander had the first nine strikes in route to a 276 game, while three other Mount Bowlers crossed the 200 plateau. The pinfall matches the fourth highest in program history, equaling a score against Kutztown in November 2021.
"Today was a step in the right direction," said head coach
Kenneth DeGraaf. "Although we are disappointed in the way the DSU match turned out, we made a choice to turn it around the very next match instead of waiting for our rematch tomorrow. By doing so, we have put a stranglehold on total pinfall. If we can perform our best against Del State tomorrow, the tie breaker is now in our favor. We cannot overlook the other teams, especially Coppin State who is much improved from years past. However, the message tomorrow is simple. Every match is a championship match. Go 5-0 and we are tournament champions."
This year, the Mount Shootout is utilizing a round-robin format with win-loss record, not total pinfall dictating standings. However, if two teams are tied with the same record by end weekend and split their head-to-head 1-1, total pinfall will then determine the winner. That being said, the Mount will have their eyes on the Hornets tomorrow as a win against DSU and taking care of business elsewhere would almost guarantee a tournament championship with their current total pinfall advantage.
Action will resume tomorrow with Senior Day ceremonies at 8:00 a.m. ET. The Mount plans to honor true seniors
Amanda Yeung and
Nichole Lewis, while also acknowledging fifth year player
Barbara Hawes and junior
Kristin Womeldorf, who will be graduating in three years due to her ability to get ahead in credits and excel in the classroom. Competition will begin at 9:00 a.m. All Senior Day festivities and competition can be streamed live on Facebook.com/MountBowling.
