Deptford, N.J. (January 22, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's bowling went a perfect 5-0 on day two of the Northeast Classic. The Mountaineers compiled wins over #4 ranked North Carolina A&T State, #10 Maryville, #24 Wisconsin-Whitewater, Wilmington, and #8 Youngtown State.
Sophomore
Alyssa Alexander led the charge with a 1,104 total (220.8 average) across five games and finished 10th in individual standings, which should be good enough for a spot on the second All-Tournament team. Senior
Rebecca Dodson rolled a 1,071 (214.2 average) and junior
Amanda Yeung went 1,035 (207 average) to finish 21st and 34th, respectively. Senior
Tamera Stanton averaged 197 and freshman
Rachel Hines averaged 214 in two games off the bench.
#9 Mount: 1,053 | #4 North Carolina A&T: 1,015
The Mountaineers defeated the Aggies in round one of traditional play for their highest ranked victory so far this weekend. Yeung and Alexander both recorded 255 to carry the Mount to a 1-0 start and even the weekend record at 3-3.
#9 Mount: 948 | #10 Maryville: 912
Playing Maryville on the toughest pair of the weekend, the Mountaineers managed to pick up their third top ten ranked victory over the Saints. Dodson (210) and Stanton (201) did enough to pace MSM to victory in the low scoring affair.
#9 Mount: 1,014 | #24 Wisconsin-Whitewater: 928
The ladies guaranteed themselves a winning record for the day in a strong second half performance against Wisconsin Whitewater. Stanton kept things going with a 228 and Dodson (210), Yeung (202) and Alexander (201) all kept their heads above the 200 mark.
#9 Mount: 1,088 | Wilmington: 882
The Mountaineers once again were strong in frames five to ten to pull away from the Wildcats and improve to 4-0 on the day. Alexander caught fire for 267 and Dodson was not far behind at 235. Hines came in off the bench and provided the first game over 200 in the two hole, a 215.
#9 Mount: 1,042 | #8 Youngstown State: 987
The second half Mountaineers once again showed up as Youngstown held a small lead after seven frames. A plethora of consecutive strikes from all five bowlers in the final three frames would push the Mount to a victory that looked more comfortable than it was. Dodson led the way with a 232 and Alexander (214) and Hines (213) were right behind her.
"To have an undefeated day at a tournament as stacked as this is simply remarkable," said head coach
Kenneth DeGraaf. "Were we perfect? Absolutely not. However, when matched up on the same pair as many great teams today we found five out of five ways to have a better set and record the win. Every match was neck and neck five frames in and then our ladies dug deep and made their adjustments to turn it up in the back half. We never really got to a hot pair all day, which was evident by no sets over 1,100 from us or our opponents in all five matches. Still, we did what was needed to get wins and have a great chance to record three more wins for a trophy finish tomorrow."
Currently sitting sixth, the Mountaineers will have a rematch with the fifth seed Stephen F. Austin in the opening round. The winner of that match will play the loser of Youngstown State and Sam Houston State. Three wins would place the Mount third, good enough for a trophy finish heading into NEC conference play. Competition starts at 8:30 a.m. and can be streamed live on the team's Facebook page.
