Deptford, N.J. (January 21, 2022) –The Mount St. Mary's women's bowling team continues to hold their own against the best in the nation as they sit sixth out of 18 teams at a stacked Northeast Classic. The Mount picked up wins over #22 nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial and #10 Stephen F. Austin, while falling to #1 Sam Houston, #2 McKendree, and #5 Vanderbilt. The losses to the McKendree and Vanderbilt would both come down to the final frame.

#9 Mount: 993 | #22 Lincoln Memorial: 960
The Mount started 1-0 with a win over LMU in the first meeting between the two programs this season. A key 214-169 advantage in game three pushed the Mountaineers to the lead and the ladies were able to hold on for the win over the Rail Splitters.
#9 Mount: 963 | #1 Sam Houston State: 1,120
While not an awful score, the Mountaineers picked an inopportune time to shoot their lowest set of the day while the #1 ranked Bearcats shot their best set of the day. Lineup changes would be made entering the next set.
#9 Mount: 1,016 | #2 McKendree: 1,032
A 157 game three would spoil four otherwise strong games in a narrow 16-pin loss to the number two team in the land. The Mount used game four and five advantages of 231-191 and 238-214 to complete an almost improbable comeback. Durbala and Yeung both entered in this round.
#9 Mount: 1,041 | #10 Stephen F. Austin: 996
The Mount and SFA played each other tightly throughout the first four games with MSM holding a narrow five-pin lead entering the final game. That is when the Mountaineers exploded with a 243 to best the Ladyjacks 203 and win the match and improve to 2-2 on the day.
#9 Mount: 1,073 | #5 Vanderbilt: 1,078
The Mountaineers and Commodores have already played four times this season with two wins a piece and every match coming down to the final frames. Friday would be no different, as the Mountaineers held a narrow three-pin lead entering game five and despite a strong 236 were bested by Vanderbilt's 244 for a five-pin total defeat.
"Well, first off let me say the loss to Vanderbilt in my opinion was the best loss we've ever took," said head coach
Kenneth DeGraaf. "Both teams were on fire and both teams were making shots when they had to. It felt like it had the energy of a national championship match. Those are the matches that despite being an L will be considered a W in our book. We did not beat ourselves and we made [first place overall] Vandy use every ounce of their energy to earn it. Similarly, I think this has to be our best day in school history with a losing record. We are averaging over 200, in a great position to get in the top four for championship Sunday, and have some great opportunities to get our record back to winning tomorrow. We need to improve our start, which includes our energy and lane play. But, all in all, today was a good day."
The Mountaineers will open with a position round battle against #4 North Carolina A&T before taking on #10 Maryville, #24 Wisconsin Whitewater, Wilmington, and #8 Youngstown State. Competition will begin at 9:30 AM ET and can be streamed live on the team's Facebook Page.
