Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 17, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse falls to LIU after the Sharks scored six goals in the third quarter.
Luke Frankeny led the team with five goals and one assist, while
Brendan Doyle added two goals and two assists.
Joe Bethke contributed three assists and
Matt Haggerty scored three goals. The Mount's man-down defense was stellar making LIU go 0-5 on extra-man advantages. The Mount's man-advantage went 2-for-3 with Frankeny and Haggerty scoring.
The Sharks were led by Richie LaCalandra who scored six goals and tallied five assists, while Blake Behlen contributed four assists and two goals.
The Mount's
Dylan Furnback made nine saves, meanwhile, LIU's Will Mark made 10 saves.
Doyle scored the game's first goal with the first two minutes to give the Mount a 1-0 lead. LIU scored three minutes later to tie the game at one. Frankeny and
Connor McMahon scored 44 seconds apart to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead. LIU scored to cut the lead down to one, but Frankeny responded with another goal 16 seconds later to keep the lead at two. LIU scored three minutes later to make it 4-3. Frankeny completed his hat trick with 1:31 remaining to put the lead back at two, but LaCalandra Scored with 46 seconds remaining to make it 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with the Mount and LIU trading goals to keep the lead at one, but LaCalandra scored twice to give the Sharks a 7-6 lead. The Mount then went on a 3-0 run where Frankeny, Haggerty, and
Noah Daniels each scored to give the Mount a 9-7 lead with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter. LaCalandra scored his fourth goal of the quarter to cut the lead to 9-8 going into the locker rooms.
The Mount came out of the locker room with a 2-0 run after Daniels knocked the ball out of the attacker's stick then the Mount went on a counter-attack where
Aaron Weisel found Haggerty and Haggerty fired a low shot that beat Marks. Bethke scored his first goal of the game to increase the lead to 13-10. LIU closed out the third quarter with a 4-0 run to retake a 14-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
LIU continued where they left off and scored three more unanswered goals to make it 17-13 midway through the fourth quarter. Doyle and Frankeny scored two late goals to reach the final score of 17-15 in favor of LIU.

The Mount returns home to face Wagner on Saturday, April 24th at 1:00 p.m. for senior day.
