Men’s Lacrosse Loses to Merrimack after Giving up Two Late Goals

Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 10, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse gave up two late goals and missed a late opportunity against Merrimack to lose 12-11. Matt Haggerty led the Mountaineers' offense with two goals and four assists while Luke Frankeny added two goals. The Mount outshot the Warriors 43-32, but the shots on goal were even at 23. The Mount defense made Merrimack turn the ball over 17 times with 12 caused turnovers.
 
Merrimack was led by Jack Rooney's five goals and one assist with Sean Black adding one goal and four assists. 
 
The Mount's Dylan Furnback made 11 saves in net, meanwhile, Henry Vogt made 12 saves for the Warriors.
 
Merrimack scored the first two goals of the game to go ahead 2-0. The Mount responded with goals from Haggerty and Connor McMahon to tie the score up at two. Rooney scored his second goal of the day to give the Warriors the lead back. The first quarter ended with Merrimack and the Mount trading goals to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead.
 
Jake Krieger scored within the first two minutes to tie the game back up at 4-4. Merrimack then scored on the man advantage to retake the lead at 5-4. The Mount goes on a 3-0 run that spans 2:44 to take a 7-5. Bryan McIntosh kicked off the run with a counter-attack goal after Furnback made a nice pass to a streaking McIntosh who ran from midfield and fired a bouncing shot to beat the goalie. Joe Bethke and Brenden McCarthy each added a goal to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the day. Rooney completed his hat trick with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter. Brendan Doyle scored with 19 seconds left to give the Mountaineers an 8-6 lead at halftime.
 
Merrimack came out of halftime with two goals from Rooney and Black to tie the game again at 8-8. Jared McMahon scored his second goal of the season to retake the lead for the Mount, but Merrimack scored another two goals to grab the lead back at 10-9.
 
The fourth quarter went back and forth until Frankeny scored his second goal of the day after he dove along the crease to tie the game at 10-10. Haggerty scored his second goal two minutes after Frankeny's to give the Mount an 11-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Merrimack scored their third-man advantage goal to tie up the score at 11. Joey Ford III scored the game-winner after he shook off a defender and fired a shot past Furnback. The Mount had an opportunity with less than 30 seconds left when Bethke hit the post on the final possession.
 
The Mount hosts Sacred Heart at 11:00 a.m. at Waldron Family Stadium on Wednesday, April 14th.
