EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 31, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's women's rugby fell short against Sacred Heart in a rain soaked game 17-10 to kick off the season. The Mountaineers fell behind early and the Pioneers did enough to keep the game just out of reach for the Mount.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacred Heart got off to a fast start with Makena Wright scoring the first try within the first two minutes, but they missed the conversion kick to make it 5-0.
- The Mount had a good chance, but could not get over the try line. Sacred Heart countered and Stephanie Wilson scored a try. They received an auto conversion because the Mount was serving a penalty to make it 12-0 going into halftime.
- The Mount got off to a quick start in the second half, scoring their first try of the game. Lavona Rae Aromin scored the Mountaineers first try of the season after the Mount passed the ball to the outside and crossed the try line, but the conversion kick just missed to make it only 12-5
- The Mount and Sacred Heart traded possession throughout the second half until the Pioneers scored their only try of the second half. Stephanie Wilson scored her second try of the game, but the Pioneers missed the conversion kick to make it 17-5.
- With under five minutes to go, Tania Wheeler stripped the ball from Sacred Heart and made a power run to get close to the try line. Jalana Jade Garcia took the restart and ran over the try line to make it 17-10. The conversion kick went wide.
