Late Game Surges Give Mount Bowling Second Place Showing

STRATFORD, N.J. (February 5, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's rallied from a loss in the morning to pull off four straight wins Friday at the Northeast Invitational. The end result was a total pinfall of 4,906 and a second place showing during the Quint Bakers portion of the tournament. Junior Tamera Stanton led the Mount with a remarkable 22.65 baker frame average in the setup position.

#7 Mount: 885 | #15 Delaware State: 889

In what amounted to the lowest score of the day, the Mountaineers came within one half set of pins to the Hornets. The four pin defeat is the tightest margin for the team since its inception, previously enumerated at seven pins versus Monmouth during the 2018 Hawk Classic.

#7 Mount: 1001 | Coppin State: 824

The Mount bounced back in another rematch from the past two weeks, rolling the first of three games north of 1,000 pins against the Eagles.

#7 Mount: 985 | LIU: 818

After capturing the first 10 frames by a slim margin of four, the Mount roared to a 255 game and never looked back. That 123 pin lead by the end of game two was more than enough, but they tacked on an extra 44 to the lead to win in decisive fashion. The contest was the team's first test against a Northeast Conference foe this year.

#7 Mount: 1026 | #17 Duquesne: 969

Pitted against another NEC challenger, these five games would not come as easy. Scores of 244 and 224 led to a comfortable advantage, but the Dukes rallied to pull within 22 pins heading to game five.  Facing a second defeat, the Mount rallied with six consecutive strikes to earn three 200-plus games in the match and their second game over the thousand mark.

#7 Mount: 1009 | Chestnut Hill: 852

The first two games against the co-host counterparts were played with little give and take. A 169-161 score gave the Mount the lead, but a 181-179 Griffin triumph kept the score within a single frame. That all changed in game three when the Mountaineers rolled to a 213, overwhelming Chestnut Hill's 141 effort. Scores of 203 and 245 for the Emmitsburg side sealed the match.

"The start we had today was unacceptable, but the response this team showed from match two onward is how championship teams respond," said head coach Kenneth DeGraaf. "Without a doubt the emphasis tomorrow will be a stronger start. I am proud on how this team continues to show resilience in every situation imaginable. If we can clean up some silly mistakes and show up in match one, I think tomorrow can be a special day for us."

Days two and three will act as a separate tournament, consisting of traditional play Saturday and bracket play Sunday. All games will be streamed on the Mount Bowling Facebook page.
