Game 1: Winthrop 5, Mount St. Mary's 2
Despite back-to-back home runs from
Mariah Godde and
Lexi Donovan, the Mountaineers fell to host Winthrop, 5-2, in the opening game of the day.
Playing less than 12 hours after falling to UIC in extra innings last night, the Mount bats were silent for the majority of the game. Winthrop pitcher Madyson Watson took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but Godde and Donovan broke up the no-hit bid by opening the frame with back-to-back long balls.
The Eagles used the bat of Ansley Gilreath to take control of the game early. Gilreath had an RBI double in the first inning, and followed with a solo home run in the third to give Winthrop a 2-0 advantage. After a Lauren King RBI single in the fifth, Gilreath connected for a two-run home in the inning to give her team a five-run lead.
Watson finished the game allowing just the two solo home runs while striking out 17 batters. For the Mount, freshman
Amaya Bowman made her first collegiate start, allowing four runs and five hits in 4.1 innings.
Avery Neuhart allowed one run in 1.2 innings of relief.
Game 2: College of Charleston 3, Mount St. Mary's 2
The College of Charleston scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie, and held off Mount St. Mary's for a 3-2 victory in the Mount's final game of the tournament.
Bridgette Gilliano went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored in the game.
Payton Wade's RBI double in the bottom of the first inning gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. The Mount fought back to even the score in the top of the fourth. Gilliano reached on a bunt single, stole second, and came around to score on
Maggie Kane's two-base hit. The College of Charleston scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 advantage with both runs coming on Mount errors.
The Mount scored once in the sixth, but saw the potential tying run thrown out at the plate. Gilliano reached on an error and stole second to set the table in the inning.
Tori Bowles walked to put runners on first and second with one out. After a strikeout,
Kassidy Johnson singled to plate Gilliano, but Wilcox was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Lexi Donovan singled to open the seventh for the Mount, and stole second with one out to move into scoring position. She moved to third on a groundout, but the Mount's final batter of the game struck out.
