Box Score 2 Rock Hill, S.C. (February 27, 2021)—Mount St. Mary's dropped a pair of hard-fought games at the Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic on Saturday. The Mount saw the College of Charleston erase a 3-0 deficit in a 5-3 win over the Mount his afternoon. In the evening, UIC survived
Kaylee Stoner's game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the seventh in an 8-3 extra-inning victory.
Game 1: College of Charleston 5, Mount St. Mary's 3
The Mountaineers scored three times in the top of the first inning, but the College of Charleston scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie and secure a 5-3 come-from-behind win.
Kaylee Stoner belted a solo home run to lead off the game to put the Mount (1-5) on top. Stoner fouled off three consecutive two-strike pitches before connecting on her first long ball of the season.
Bridgette Gilliano followed with a walk and moved into scoring position with a steal of second base.
Maggie Kane tripled to left center to bring home Gilliano for a two-run lead. After a strikeout,
Elizabeth King walked to put runners on the corners. The Mount then attempted a double steal, King was thrown out at second, but Kane scampered home on the play for a three-run lead.
Mount starter
Avery Neuhart cruised through the first three innings, allowing just a pair of singles. The Cougars got back in the game quickly in the fourth when Jenna Helberg drew a leadoff walk and Payton Wade followed with a two-run homer to make it a one-run game.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the fifth, Jenna Carter singled, stole second, and then came home with the tying run on an Aniz Roman two-base hit.
The College of Charleston completed the comeback with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Wade singled and moved to second on a Mount error. Riley Miller doubled to bring home Wade with the go-ahead run. Miller then scored the insurance run on a Kayla Gutierrez RBI single.
Mariah Godde had a one-out single for the Mount in the seventh, but the Cougars were able to get the final two outs for the win.
Neuhart allowed five runs and nine hits in the complete-game loss. Five different Mountaineers recorded a hit in the contest.
Game 2: UIC 8, Mount St. Mary's 3 (8 innings)

Mount starter
Amanda Berkley held the Flames in check for the first four innings before the Mount offense got on the board. In the fourth,
Tori Bowles singled with one out, and she came around to score on
Kassidy Johnson's RBI single. Johnson moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on
Shelbee Holcomb's infield single to make it 2-0.
UIC put runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth, and Tara McElligott came through with a two-run single to even the score. McElligott moved to second on the throw to home, and she scored the go-ahead run on a Tara Crowley single.
The Mount put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth when Johnson walked and
Julia Vincent followed with a bunt single. Bowles was retired on a groundout to end the threat.
Stoner came through with a clutch one-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score.
Vanessa Martin followed with a walk and she advanced to second on a wild pitch, but UIC got the final two outs to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the tiebreaker rule was put in place with a runner place on second to open the inning. A Berkey wild pitch moved the runner to third, and then a walk put runners on the corners with no outs. Kayla Wedl broke the tie with a triple to plate both runners for a two-run advantage. Wedl came home on a sacrifice fly. Alannah Cran's two-run double made it a five-run inning for the Flames.
The Mount will close out the tournament tomorrow with two more games, playing host Winthrop at 9:30 a.m. before having a rematch with the College of Charleston at 2:00 p.m.
