EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 26, 2021) – Postseason play kicks off for Mount St. Mary's water polo this weekend, as they head to the round robin style Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference West Regional Championship. The Mountaineers is set to compete in a pool with Salem and Gannon Saturday, with teams to be determined on Sunday.
SETTING THE SCENE
The Mountaineers finished their first regular season at 3-3, with victories over Mercyhurst, Washington & Jefferson and Salem.
Jason O'Donnell remains the team leader in goals with 31 and
Kacper Cieplik leads in assists with 12.
Eli Thalos has enjoyed a solid all-around, leading with 17 steals and adding 13 goals and 10 assists.
FORMAT
Seeding based on how teams play in their pool Saturday determines who the Mount will play Sunday. Two wins results in the Mountaineers playing for first place, a split for third and two losses drops to fifth.
THE OPPONENTS
Gannon finished the short season strong, going 5-1 with a 4-1 MAWPC record. The Golden Knights handed the Mount two of their three defeats.
Because of COVID issues, Salem had to scramble to earn qualification. Facing a grueling three-game schedule in two days, the Tigers lost all games to the Mount, Gannon and Mercyhurst.
LOOKING AHEAD
The two regional championship participants qualify for the CWPA Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship in Annapolis the first weekend in March.
