Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 17, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's beats Delaware 10-7 in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
Noah Daniels,
Luke Frankeny, and
Brendan Doyle each scored two goals to help the Mountaineers secure the victory.
Delaware's JP Ward and Mark Bieda scored two goals apiece in Delaware's attempted comeback.
Dylan Furnback had 10 saves in the Mountaineers win, while Matt Kilkeary managed 17 saves for the Blue Hens.
Delaware got off to a flying start with Ward scoring a goal in the first 41 seconds. The Mount responded with a six goal run that continued into the second quarter.
Kadin Kightlinger started off the run by scoring with a nice turnaround goal over his left shoulder.
Joe Bethke and
Connor McMahon each scored to help the Mount get a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Frankeny got his first goal of the season to lead off the second quarter. The Mount extended their lead to 6-1 with goals from Daniels and
Jared McMahon. Clay Miller scored Delaware's only goal of the quarter with a man advantage. Daniels got his second goal of the game to put Mount up 7-2 at halftime.
Frankeny got his second goal by running through Delaware's defense and beating the goalkeeper through the five-hole. Delaware answered immediately with a goal from Brook Rideau to keep the Mount's lead at five. Doyle found the net with a hard shot from the right side that beat the goalie between his legs. Delaware ended the third quarter with two goals to close the gap to 9-5.
Dealware started off the fourth quarter with a goal by Nick Jessen to cut the deficit to three. Doyle iced the game with his second goal of the day by juking out the defender and firing a shot past the goalkeeper to make it 10-6. Delaware scored a late goal to make the final score 10-7.
Sam Stephan dominated the X today, going 14-of-21(66.67%).
