MORGANTON, W.Va. (February 14, 2021) – In a game fueled by offense, the Mount St. Mary's men's water polo team fell short to the high-powered McKendree Bearcats, 22-12, at The Aquatic Center at Mylan Park Sunday. The Mount dropped to 2-3 for their inaugural season.
Once again,
Jason O'Donnell led the way with a game-high eight goals.
Eli Thalos added to the goal tally with three, as did
Jason Fitch with one. Goalkeeper
Marko Kruska made 16 saves in what turned out to be a busy day for a net minder.
For the Bearcats (3-0), Matthew Haygood led his team with six goals.
O'Donnell gave the Mount its lone lead with a penalty shot in the first quarter. McKendree rallied to tie the game almost immediately before a Haygood goal put them on top. O'Donnell's second tied the score again, but the Bearcats rattled off four straight to lead 6-2.
Two more goals for O'Donnell, along with Fitch's goal and the first of Thalos' three helped the Mount keep pace, as they trailed 10-6 at half.
McKendree pulled away in the third quarter with a seven goal period. For the second half, the Bearcats scored 12 goals, compared to six for the Mount.
One final regular season game is on tap, a rescheduled contest with Salem. The showdown was moved to the ARCC Swimming Pool with a 5 p.m. start time Friday (Feb. 19).
