GAME NOTES
EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 8, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball, looking to repeat as Northeast Conference Champions, start their quest Tuesday when they challenge Seton Hall to open the 2021-22 season.
2020-2021 RECAP
With a record of 17-7 (14-4 NEC), Mount St. Mary's used a conference leading offensive attack and a stout defense to win the regular season and sweep through Fairleigh Dickinson and Wagner to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Slotted as a No. 15 seed, the Mountaineers challenged in-state foes Maryland during the first round, falling 98-45.
At season's end, head coach
Maria Marchesano departed for Purdue Fort Wayne, and
Antoine White was promoted to the job, becoming the seventh person in program history to lead the Mount women.
NEC PRESEASON POLL
For the second straight season, the Mount received a unanimous selection from the NEC coaches to repeat as champions.
A RETURNING ELITE EIGHT
Eight members of last year's team are back for this season. This includes reigning NEC Player and Defensive Player of the Year
Kendall Bresee, who led the team in four stat categories (points, rebounds, assists and steals). Bresee became the first Mountaineer to take four stat lines since Alexis Carter in 2015-16.
All-NEC selections
Michaela Harrison,
Aryna Taylor and
Jessica Tomasetti also return. Harrison already boasts 1,000 points for her career and is closing in on the all-time three pointer record. Taylor enters her third campaign with an even 500 points over the first two years. Tomasetti made the All-Rookie Team following a solid freshman season.
Kayla Agentowicz, a fixture on the roster since 2016, comes back for a sixth season of play. Agentowicz gained extra eligibility because of an injury and the pandemic. Sophomores
Isabella Hunt,
Jada Lee and
Isabella Pelaia round out the returners.
NEWCOMERS
Five players are poised their Mount debuts this season, led by graduate transfer
Tess Borgosz. Borgosz played four seasons at Towson and is expected to fill a post void left by the departing
Rebecca Lee. The Mount added extra depth at the post as well, recruiting
Abby Bailey and
Maddie McCrea.
A pair of guards in
Jasmine Lindsay-Huskey and
Jaedyn Jamison also arrive in Emmitsburg, completing the class of one transfer and four true freshmen.
SCOUTING SETON HALL
A third-place finish for the Pirates ended in heartbreak as they fell to Creighton in the first round of the Big East Tournament.
Ending the year at 14-7 (12-5 Big East), Seton Hall is in a similar situation to the Mount with many of their starters returning. Leading scorer and rebounder Andra Espinoza-Hunter is back after posting 18.6 points for the Pirates last year. High percentage scorer Desiree Elmore and assist giver Lauren Park-Lane are also expected to make an impact once again.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Tuesday's showdown is a grudge math after the two sides split their first two meetings. Seton Hall took a game by a 71-68 final in 2000, and Mount St. Mary's won a 74-64 decision in South Orange in 2012.
The Mount is 1-26 all-time against the Big East, with the 2012 Seton Hall game serving as the lone win.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saturday (Nov. 13) marks the Mount's home debut. Before they take on Valley Forge at 1 p.m., the team will unveil their 2020-21 championship banner. Ceremonies begin at 12:45 p.m. at Knott Arena.
