MILLSBORO, Del. (November 21, 2021) – The Mount St. Mary's women's bowling team will enter the holiday break with an outstanding 40-12 overall record after a solid Sunday to conclude the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic at Millsboro Lanes. In bracket play, the ladies reinforced their Northeast Conference dominance so far this season with wins over #11 ranked Duquesne and #22 Long Island. The lone loss came to #7 Youngstown State to mark a 2-1 day and 7-5 overall weekend after starting 1-3 in their toughest tournament to date this season.
Senior
Tamera Stanton led a balanced scoring attack for the Mountaineers with a 20.93 baker frame average. Junior
Amanda Yeung (19.70) and sophomore
Alyssa Alexander (19.67) both eclipsed the 19.00 frame average mark, while freshman
Rachel Hines (18.90) and senior
Rebecca Dodson (18.36) ensured all five Mountaineers would be above an 18.00 pace for the second consecutive day.
#13 Mount: 4 (213-200-246-203-224-214-213) | #11 Duquesne: 3 (187-211-186-234-194-238-206)
The Mountaineers made it 3-0 against the Dukes so far this season with an impressive 4-3 best-of-seven victory. All seven games eclipsed the 200 mark for MSM, but neither team could win on the right lane as they rotated throughout the first six games. Duquesne got lane choice being the higher seed and made the obvious choice to keep The Mount on the winless lane. The ladies dug deep, however, and scrapped out a 213 to the Dukes 206 for the victory.
#13 Mount: 1 (154-194-159-193-183) | #7 Youngstown State: 4 (208-178-236-201-203)
An absolutely brutal transition pair had the Mountaineers slightly more puzzled than the Penguins in a 4-1 loss. Major ball changes were made and looked promising in the final two games, but YSU found a way to knock all ten down in key situations to prevent the contest from going past five.
#13 Mount: 4 (189-211-178-244) | #22 Long Island: 0 (162-191-150-202)
Another NEC foe resulted in another win for The Mount in a 4-0 sweep over the Sharks of Long Island. LIU never came within 20 pins of a contest as the Mountaineers found timely string after string to generate distance entering the tenth frames. In all five tournaments this year The Mount has won their final match of the weekend.
"What a semester by our veteran group," said head coach
Kenneth DeGraaf. "When we put this schedule together, it was all about seeing the best teams in the country day in and day out in hopes of better preparing us for conference and a hopeful return to nationals. In the back of our heads we accepted if that meant a blunder in our win-loss record to be better prepared for postseason than it was worth it. There is still a second half of the season to go, but these ladies found a way to have our best first semester record in program history despite this being a far tougher schedule than the previous three years. We now look forward to finishing the semester strong academically and beginning our preparation to host the second annual Blue & White Vegas Classic come January. Exciting times ahead for our program."
