Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 7, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's senior
Kendall Bresee earned her third career double-double on Thursday night – a 20 point, 10 rebound effort in the Mount's 76-68 win over St. Francis Brooklyn at Knott Arena.
The 20 points were Bresee's third-highest total as a Mountaineer, and the 10 rebounds were the most for her since a game against Merrimack on February 23, 2020. She finished with six assists, and four more dimes would have credited Bresee with the Mount's first triple-double since 1990.
"What an exciting game!" Bresee said. "It was 33 days not playing, so everyone was very locked in. We had a great week of practice and were ready to go. We came out of the gate running, and it showed. I'm just really proud of my team. Our coaches came through with the scouting report, and we came together."
Bridget Birkhead provided a boost to the cause with 15 points, drilling five triples.
Aryna Taylor reached double figures with 13 points, including a pair of late layups that helped seal the contest.
Kayla Agentowicz added a productive nine points and four rebounds,
Rebecca Lee contributed seven and seven with three blocks, and
Isabella Hunt supplied four points, two steals and an assist during an efficient eight minutes of game time.
Mount St. Mary's (2-2, 1-0 NEC) shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor, including 8-for-19 from downtown. St. Francis Brooklyn (1-4, 1-4 NEC) received 19 points and seven boards from Ally Lassen, and shot 20-for-26 from the charity stripe.
Coming off a 33 day break from games, Mount had to shake off a bit of rust while contending with a fast paced Terrier squad. The home side held their own, with Bresee primarily delivering the offense in a quick seven points. Three Mountaineers cracked the points column, but their combined effort kept the game within a possession at quarter's end.
The remainder of the first half saw the sides pull even. They would regain the lead with an 8-0 run, as a Birkhead trey pushed the Mount back ahead at 24-22. Heading into the locker room, the teams were deadlocked at 32, each shooting 13-for-33 from the floor.
With a 6-0 run serving as the catalyst, the Mount took control of the game in the third quarter. Out of 12 shots that were attempted, nine went in, and Hunt's layup with 2:48 left rocketed the advantage to double digits. The Terriers hung around to close the gap to nine points as the game progressed to the fourth quarter.
The Mountaineers sauntered along and kept a healthy lead until the final two minutes of the contest, when St. Francis Brooklyn made a last-ditch effort to earn the victory. The Terriers' Nevena Dimitrijevic drew a three shot foul and hit all free throws, and Lassen added a layup to pull within five. But two timely layups from Taylor on back-to-back possessions stopped the rally, and free throws down the stretch completed the triumph.
Game two between the Mountaineers and Terriers will tip-off at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
