Box Score 2 DAVIS, Calif. (March 7, 2020) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team rallied late in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, then held off a rally from the UC Davis Aggies to win their first game of the season. After winning the contest, 8-5, they fell in the nightcap, 15-3.
Jordan Geber and Cole Reeder held the Aggies scoreless for the first seven innings. UC Davis countered as the early moments of Saturday became a pitchers' duel.
In the seventh, Mount's offense started strong with singles by Thomas Bramley and Ryan Fisher to put runners at the corners. Owen Wosleger then executed the squeeze play, allowing Bramley to score. The following inning, the Mountaineers rallied again with one out. Seven consecutive batters reached base, starting with a Thomas Savastio single and ending with an RBI single from Jared Urban. Vaughn Parker II, Trevor Leamer, Fisher and Wosleger drove in runs along the way as the Mount scored five runs for a 6-0 lead.
UC Davis cut into the lead with a run in the eighth, but Mount responded with a bases loaded walk drawn by A.J. Narcise and another Wosleger RBI single.
With their backs against the wall the Aggies began a furious rally to try and steal the win. Back-to-back doubles forced the Mount's hand, and Ryan Florio was brought in to finish off the game. After conceding another RBI single, he induced a fly out to left for the Mountaineers' first win.
Mount finished with a season-high 13 hits, including multi-hit games from Myles Nicholson, Parker, Leamer, Fisher and Wosleger.
Any chance of a doubleheader sweep and a series victory were thrown out at the start of game two. The Aggies scored 13 runs over the first three frames with seven runs in the second inning.
The Mountaineers brought in all three of its runs in the fifth. Connor Buggy reached on an error to score Bramley, and Urban and Nicholson drove home first Fisher and then Buggy.
Brendan Kennedy recovered from Friday for a scoreless relief appearance, and Bryant Shives and Derek Huff added blemish-free outings as well.
Mount St. Mary's returns home for two midweek games. The Mountaineers will face Navy Tuesday (March 10) and Coppin State Wednesday (March 11). Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
