EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 4, 2020) – Before the postseason can begin, Mount St. Mary's has one final regular season contest to complete. On Thursday they will welcome the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to Knott Arena.
THE MATCHUP
Mount's season long nine-game win streak got started in Teaneck with a 69-61 victory over the Knights. The Mountaineers shot over 50 percent from the floor, led by Michaela Harrison with 18 points.
The victory extends Mount's advantage in the all-time series to 35-24, and a current streak to eight consecutive wins.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Mount St. Mary's has locked in the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. That guarantees the team a quarterfinal game at home, and a semifinal game if they advance.
Despite having one of their lowest field goal percentage in the loss to Robert Morris last Monday, the Mountaineers still lead the NEC in scoring offense and field goal percentage. The squad places in the top half in most major statistical categories, inlcuding second-best for three point percentage and assists, and third-best for steals.
A triumph for the Mountaineers would earn the team's first 20 win season since the 1999-2000 campaign.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
Thursday's game carries major implications for Fairleigh Dickinson. A victory for them will give the Knights a home game in the NEC tournament, which will be their first since 1996-97. It also would push their record to 9-9 in conference - something that hasn't happened since 2008-09. A defeat makes them travel for the tournament.
Madison Stanley and Lauren Francillon lead the Knights in scoring, at 11.8 and 11.3, respectively. Francillon is also the team's leader in rebounds at 6.8.
THE NEC TOURNAMENT BATTLE
By locking in the No. 2, Mount will host the No. 7 seed in the quarterfinals.
The race for No. 7 is wide open, with four teams in the running. Bryant is the most likely competitor with a 37.5 percent chance to land in the spot. Wagner and Long Island have 25 percent odds to take seventh, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson at 12.5 percent.
Mount is 6-1 against these opponents so far, with the lone loss coming against Bryant on January 25th.
LOOKING AHEAD
The NEC quarterfinals will commence at 7 p.m. Monday (March 9) at Knott Arena.
