MOUNT UPDATE
The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team got themselves back in the win column after a thrilling comeback win over VMI on Saturday. After trailing 9-5 to begin the fourth quarter, the Mount would use a 5-0 final frame to defeat the Keydets. Kelly Gouin sparked the Mountaineer comeback with three consecutive goals in under five minutes to play, including the game-tying goal with 27 seconds left. On the ensuing faceoff, Steven Schmitt stripped the VMI faceoff man and Noah Daniels was able to give the Mountaineers possession. Daniels would not give up the ball as he no defender picked him up and he scored his first career collegiate goal to give the Mountaineers a 10-9 win.
The Mount defense has had a strong start to the 2020 season ranking top-20 in two categories. In the first five games, the man-down defense has only allowed three goals on 14 opportunities (78.6%) to put them 17th in the nation in man-down defense. The Mountaineers have also posted a .888 clearing percentage to rank them number-15 in the country in clearing percentage.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
The #20-ranked Spiders come into Tuesday's matchup having dropped their past two games both to ranked teams. After falling to #6 Notre Dame 13-5, Richmond had a nice bounce back game against #13-ranked Duke on the road. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils were able to take them down 16-15 in overtime on Friday night. Offensively, the Spiders are led by Ryan Lanchbury (8g, 11a) and Richie Connell (14g). Jack Rusbuldt has started all five games in net and posted 12.31 goals against average. Richmond has a platoon of players at the X this year to help register a .417 faceoff percentage. The Spiders have failed to win on the road this season with all losses coming against ranked opponents.
INSIDE THE SERIES
In a series that started back in March of 2015, the Richmond Spiders hold a 4-1 edge over the Mountaineers all-time. The lone Mount win came in thrilling fashion as the Mountaineers took down #14-ranked Richmond 12-11 in overtime just a year ago. Luke Frankeny tied the game with just 1.4 seconds left in the final quarter and Chris DiPretoro would end up winning it for the Mount in overtime. Each of the five contests between the two schools have been decided by three goals or less. This will be the fifth consecutive season that the Spiders and the Mountaineers matchup against each other.
