A Late Rally Helps Johns Hopkins Top Mount Men's Lacrosse 13-12 in Overtime

Baltimore, Md. (Tuesday, March 10th) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team (3-5) saw a 12-8 lead with under five minutes to play dash in front of their eyes as Johns Hopkins (2-4) comes back to win 13-12 in overtime. Brendan Doyle (3g, 1a) and Brenden McCarthy (2g, 2a) led the Mountaineers with four points each. Sam Stephan, Matt Haggerty (2g), Noah Daniels, Luke Frankeny, and Kelly Gouin (2g) each registered a goal in the loss. Dylan Furnback made 14 saves in net.

Mountaineers were ready to go here at Homewood Field tonight once they arrived off the bus. Brendan Doyle, back after missing two games and back at midfield, had the Mount up 1-0 on their first possession of the game. On the ensuing faceoff, Sam Stephan went right down main street off the draw to give make it 2-0. After a Hopkins penalty, Carter Warm would notch his first collegiate point with a feed to Kelly Gouin to have the Mountaineers in front 3-0. The Blue Jays would score three of the next four goals and we headed to the second quarter up 4-3.

The Mount would open the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Frankeny and Daniels to increase their lead back to three. The two teams would trade goals towards the end of the half and the Mount led 7-4 at the break.

After a Blue Jay goal to open the third quarter, Doyle would score two consecutive goals to get the Mountaineers up 9-5. Haggerty would notch his first of the day late in the third and we went to the final quarter of play with a 10-7 lead.

Gouin began the final frame with his second of the day to put the Mount back up 11-7. After Williams' second of the game for Hop, Haggerty buried his second of the day for the Mount. The Mountaineers would find themselves up 12-8 with 5:35 remaining. Hopkins would score four-straight to end regulation, including the equalizer with 57 seconds left in the game, to help send this one to overtime.

After both teams had a possession in overtime, Owen Murphy found his way to the front of the net for his first goal of the game and to give the Blue Jays the win.

Cole Williams led Hopkins with four goals and an assist while Jacob Angelius finished with four points (2g, 2a). Kyle Prouty had a phenomenal day at the X going 20-for-28 and picked up 14 groundballs. The faceoff man even added a goal in the Hopkins rally in the fourth. Ryan Darby made nine saves in net to earn the victory.

The Mountaineers will have to have a short memory as they open up Northeast Conference play this Saturday, March 14th at Sacred Heart.
