Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. (February 8th, 2020) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 67-62 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 13-9 overall and 8-2 in Northeast Conference play. Kendall Bresee led Mount scorers with 15 points and added 7 rebounds. Kayla Agentowicz had a do-it-all performance on Saturday with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals while Michaela Harrison (12 points) and Rebecca Lee (10 points) each finished in double figures.
After a back and forth first frame, the Mountaineers found themselves trailing 15-12. To begin the second quarter, both teams were strong defensively, only allowing a combined ten points with under five minutes remaining in the period. With under two to play in the second frame, Harrison started to heat up for the Mountaineers with back-to-back three balls to keep the game even at 26. As time expired in the second, Lee put back a rebound off an Agentowicz miss to give the Mount a 28-27 lead at the break. Heading into this game, the Mountaineers were 12-0 when leading at halftime.
A 9-0 run to open the third quarter boosted the Mountaineers to a ten-point lead. Hounding defense from the Mount also held the Terriers to zero points for the first four minutes of the third period. Bresee, who only had two points in the first half, turned it on offensively to record ten of the 21 Mountaineer points in the third quarter. Using a 21-14 third period, the Mount took a 49-42 lead into the final quarter of basketball.
In the fourth quarter, St. Francis Brooklyn cut the Mount lead to four with under six minutes to play. Timely three-point balls from Bresee and Harrison would give the Mountaineers a 58-50 lead. Bridget Birkhead would get in on the action with her first three of the day to give the Mount a 63-52 lead with 2:30 remaining. When it looked like the Terriers would go away, they kept battling. A 10-1 Terrier run in the final minutes had the Mount lead cut to 64-62 with 45 seconds left.
To cap off a strong performance, Agentowicz would put the nail in the coffin for the Terriers with a pullup two-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 66-62 lead with 12.6 seconds to go. Bresee finished the game off by drawing an offensive charge on the other end to seal the victory in Brooklyn.
Jenna Jordan finished with a double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds) for St. Francis Brooklyn (6-16 overall, 2-9 NEC) while Alyssa Fisher had 15 points for the Terriers
The Mount women's basketball team will have a daybreak before matching up with Long Island University in Brooklyn on Monday night. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
