Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. (Feb. 28, 2020) - The offense was dormant for the Mount St. Mary's baseball team as they suffered their fourth and fifth straight losses Friday to open the season. Maryland Eastern Shore shut out the Mount over 16 innings, winning the first game 4-0 and the second 7-0.
Several arms did well for the Mountaineers (0-5), beginning with Michael Kuypers, who provided five innings of one run relief in the first game. Andrew Malone also produced a scoreless outing in game one, as did Luke Pryor, Brett Midkiff and Blake Beal during game two.
But the Mount's bats were held in check, only scattering nine hits throughout the day. Vaughn Parker II was the team leader with three hits on the day, while Ryan Fisher and Myles Nicholson tallied multiple hit days as well.
On the other side, the Hawks (3-6) jumped on both Mountaineer starters. Michael Yetter was solid for three innings before giving up three in the fourth. In the nightcap, Brenden Kennedy gave up six runs in the first inning before being pulled. Both starters took the loss for their respective contests.
Eastern Shore designated hitter Matt Smith crushed a pair of home runs and drove in six of the team's 11 runs. Blake Coleman and Chris Martin added round trippers in game two.
Mount St. Mary's will look to regroup on the West Coast, beginning with a two-game set against San Francisco Tuesday and Wednesday (Mar. 3-4). First pitch on Tuesday will be at 5 p.m. Eastern time from the Benedetti Diamond.
