Mount Softball Swept by Gardner-Webb on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Boiling Springs, N.C. (February 23, 2020)--Mount St. Mary's lost a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, falling 10-1 in the opening game and 3-2 in game two.

GAME 1:  Gardner-Webb 10, Mount St. Mary's 1 (5 inn.)

Gardner-Webb scored 10 times in the bottom of the fifth to break open a tight game in the opening game of the twin bill.  Maggie Kane drove in the Mount's run in the contest.

The Mountaineers used a two-out rally to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Vanessa Martin doubled with two outs, and Kaia Bonshock walked to put runners on first and second.  Kane followed with a base hit to bring home Martin with the first run of the game.  The Runnin' Bulldogs erupted for 10 runs in the fifth to secure the win.  Molly Montgomery doubled to open the inning, and a Jenna Wacaster single put runners on first and third with no outs.  The Mount brought in Amanda Berkley in relief, and she was greeted by a Weslyn Almond base hit that evened the score.  After a ground out, Autumn Owen loaded the bases with a base hit, and a wild pitch allowed Almond to score the go-ahead run.  Three consecutive RBI singles and a pair of bases loaded hit batsmen broke the game open.

Neuhart allowed three runs in 4.1 innings of work to take the loss while Berkley was tagged for seven earned runs in one-third of an inning.

GAME 2: Gardner-Webb 3, Mount St. Mary's 2

In the second game, Gardner-Webb fought back from a 2-0 deficit for the one-run victory.  Jordan Weaver tossed a complete-game four-hitter for the Mountaineers.

Shelbee Holcomb and Mariah Godde each singled with one out to put runners on first and second.  After a fielder's choice, Lexi Donovan singled to drive home Godde with the first run of the game.  Donovan stole second base, and then a wild pitch on a Kirsten Mumma walk allowed Jessica Nines to scamper home with the second run.  Gardner-Webb answered with a run in the bottom of the second on Ashlee Baker's solo home run.  An Andrea Lyon sacrifice fly plated the tying run in the bottom of the third inning.  The Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Wacaster tripled, and came home to score on a Baker RBI groundout.

Holcomb went 2-for-3 to pace the Mount offense in the game while Weaver struck out four in the complete game.

The Mount returns to action against San Diego State and No. 1 UCLA on Friday, February 28, at the San Diego Classic.
