Box Score 2 EMMITSBURG, Md. (Feb. 22, 2020) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team was overwhelmed by the sharp hitting of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. The visitors racked up 22 runs on 30 hits during Saturday's doubleheader, taking 11-9 and 11-2 victories back to Olean, N.Y. and leaving the Mountaineers swept on opening weekend.
Thomas Savastio was a bright spot for the Mount (0-3), finishing 4-for-9 with four runs driven in. Three of those RBI's came in the opener. Vaughn Parker II showed both patience and productiveness with a three walk showing in game one and a 2-for-2 effort in game two. Myles Nicholson hit his first home run of the season - a solo shot in the third inning of the nightcap.
But the real power came from St. Bonaventure's (3-0) Brendyn Stillman and Tyler Kelder. The duo combined for an impressive nine round trippers, led by Kelder with five. Each player finished the day with eight RBI's to their name. First baseman Matthew Williams added another six hits with a pair of RBI's.
The first game was highly competitive throughout. Stillman and Kedler went back-to-back for the first time out of three to start, but Savastio countered with a two run single to draw level. In the third inning, Mount would grab their only lead at 6-5 thanks to another Savastio single, a bases loaded walk by Trevor Leamer and CJ Kozorosky reaching on an error.
A sac fly in the fourth by the Bonnies tied the score. They would score twice in the fifth and Kelder homered again in the seventh for a 9-6 visitors' edge.
Tye Golden hit a sac fly to pull within two before Leamer trotted home on a wild pitch to make it 9-8. The Bonnies added insurance in the ninth but that did not deter the Mountaineers from rallying. With the bases loaded and down to the last out, Ryan Haddaway ripped an RBI single to place the tying run into scoring position. Nicholson arrived at the plate and almost tied the score, but a diving stop by St. Bonaventure's Brendan Myers ended the threat and the game.
The Bonnies ran away with the second game, scoring nine times in the first four innings. Following Nicholson's homer, the Mount could only muster one additional run - a Savastio single in the fifth.
Mount remains home to face Maryland Eastern Shore next weekend. The three-game series will consist of a doubleheader beginning at noon Friday (Feb. 28) and a single 10 a.m. contest Saturday (Feb. 29).
