Box Score 2 February 22, 2020—Mount St. Mary's softball lost a pair of one-run games today at the GWU Softball Tournament held at Gardner-Webb University. The Mountaineers saw Eastern Illinois scored in the top of the seventh to earn a 3-2 victory in the Mount's first game of the day. In the second game, the Mount allowed Northern Kentucky a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win.
GAME 2: Northern Kentucky 4, Mount St. Mary's 3
The Mountaineers allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-3 loss to Northern Kentucky in the Mount's first game of the day. Kaia Bonshock went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI for the Mount in the game.
Northern Kentucky scored twice in the bottom of the second off Mount starter Amanda Berkley to take a 2-0 lead. The Mount fought back, scoring twice in the third and one more time in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
In the third, Kirsten Mumma and Kaylee Stoner to put runners on first and second with one out. After a strikeout, Bonshock connected for a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2. Lexi Donovan reached on an error, and moved to third on an error on Mumma's sacrifice bunt. After Stoner reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, Kane plated the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh. Josie Frazier opened the inning with a bunt single off Avery Neuhart, and a Kailey Rossiter walk put runners on first and second. After a popout, Northern Kentucky loaded the bases on a Mount error. Hailey Whitmer followed with an RBI single to even the score. Toree Stalter then grounded out the second, but the Mount was unable to turn a double play and the winning run score.
Berkley allowed two runs in four innings while Neuhart allowed two unearned runs in 2.2 innings of work.
GAME 2: Eastern Illinois 3, Mount St. Mary's 2
Eastern Illinois scored a run in the top of the seventh to post a 3-2 victory over the Mount in the second game of the day. Kaylee Stoner went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Vanessa Martin added a pair of hits in the game.
Megan Burton connected for a two-run homer in the top of the second to give Eastern Illinois the early lead. The Mount fought back with single runs in the third and the fifth to even the score.
In the third, Stoner singled and moved to third on an error by the center fielder. Kaia Bonshock then delivered an RBI single to cut the Mount's deficit to 2-1. In the fifth, the Mount evened the score with Stoner providing the momentum again. Stoner singled with one out and moved to third on an Eastern Illinois error. After Maggie Kane was hit by a pitch, Stoner came home on a Bonshock squeeze.
The score remained tied until the top of the seventh. Burton doubled and then came home on an Amber Cieplinski single. Stoner singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mount was unable to bring her home.
Amanda Berkley started for the Mount, allowing two runs in four innings. Avery Neuhart pitched the final three innings, allowing one run.
The Mount plays a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb tomorrow.
