Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (Saturday, February 22nd) – The Mount St. Mary's (1-2) men's lacrosse team fell to UMBC 9-4 on Saturday in a game where the Mountaineer offense never seemed to find their rhythm. Brenden McCarthy led the Mountaineers with two goals and an assist while Joe Bethke and Matt Haggerty each added a goal apiece. Dylan Furnback made nine saves in net in the loss.
The Mount was on the board early in this matchup as McCarthy notched one just a minute into the game. After two UMBC goals, McCarthy would put home his second of the day to even the game at two. Bethke would follow the Massachusetts native to give the Mount a 3-2 lead which would be the only lead they would see today. The Retrievers would score the next three goals to find themselves up 5-3 with less than five minutes left in the first half. With time expiring at the end of the second quarter, Haggerty threw a hail Mary shot on net that the goalie did not seem to see, and it found the back of the net at the buzzer. The Mountaineer faithful was hoping this could be the bounce the team needed to spark the offense.
Unfortunately, that would be the last goal the Mountaineers would score as the Retrievers would score all four second half goals. Brandon Galloway led UMBC with four goals while five other Retrievers potted home a goal. Tommy Linger came up big in net with 16 saves to earn the victory. UMBC moves to 1-1 on the season and have taken down the Mountaineers in each of the past two seasons.
Sam Stephan finished 8-15 at the X with four ground balls. The Mountaineer defense held the Retrievers to 0-6 on extra man opportunities while having a good day clearing going 20-22.
The Mount will have a quick turnaround as they will take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Tuesday, February 25th. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
