Box Score Moon Township, Pa. (February 21, 2020)—Mount St. Mary's stretched its win streak to seven with a huge 62-59 road win at Robert Morris on Friday in a battle of the top two teams in the Northeast Conference. Kayla Agentowicz scored a season-high 20 points while Jatarrikah Settle added her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mount to the victory.
Leading 47-44 heading into the fourth quarter, the Mount (17-9, 12-2 NEC) extended its lead to 52-46 on an Agentowicz three-pointer. The Colonials, who entered the game with a 14-game win streak, scored the next six points to tie the score, but Michaela Harrison found Agnetowicz open for a lay-up to give the Mount a 54-52 advantage with 5:03 remaining.
Three Mount free throws extended the lead to 57-52, and after a Robert Morris basket, Settle gave the Mount a 59-54 lead on a drive with 1:47 on the clock. Robert Morris (19-7, 14-1 NEC) cut the deficit to 59-56 on an Esther Castedo jumper, and the Mount's Aryna Taylor hit 1-of-2 at the line for a four-point lead. The Colonials would not go away with Castedo knocking down a three-pointer with 15.7 seconds left to trim the Mount lead to 60-59.
Agentowicz was fouled, and she calmly sank both free throw attempts with 9.6 seconds left for a three-point lead. Honoka Ikematsu had a chance to tie the game, but her three-pointer was off the mark, but the Mount's Taylor was called for traveling on the rebound, giving the Colonials one more chance to tie the score. Isabella Posset got a look from the right wing, but her three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark and the Mount secured the big road win.
The Mount now trails Robert Morris by one game in the loss column in the NEC standings with a 12-2 league mark. Robert Morris is now 14-1 in league play.
Agentowicz finished with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals in her best game of the season. Settle added 12 points and 10 rebounds while Kendall Bresee added 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in the victory. Dahomee Forgues led the Colonials with 11 ponts while Nneka Ezeigbo had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Mountaineers shot 44.9 percent in the game and hit 14-of-20 (.700) at the foul line. Robert Morris shot 34.3 percent overall and was 3-for-24 (.125) from three-point range.
Robert Morris jumped out to an early 10-9 lead before the Mountaineers responded with a 6-0 run to grab the lead. The Mount defense sparked the run as Bresee and Bridget Birkhead scored consecutive buckets off steals to give the Mount the lead. The teams exchanged the lead the rest of the quarter with RMU taking a 15-14 lead at the end of the first.
Bresee scored five consecutive points to put the Mount ahead early in the second quarter. She knotted the game at 17-17 with a step-back three-pointer, and then gave the Mount the lead with a drive to the basket. Robert Morris answered with the next eight points to build a 25-19 advantage.
The Mount fought back with an 11-to-3 run to close out the first half to take a 30-28 lead at the break. A Birkhead triple cut the deficit to 25-23, and after a Robert Morris free throw, Aryna Taylor scored to cut the RMU lead to 26-25. Agentowicz converted a nice feed from Bresee to put the Mount ahead. The back-and-forth affair continued as Settle scored on a drive after an inbounds pass to give the Mount a 29-28 lead after RMU's Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu scored on a putback. Agentowicz hit 1-of-2 at the line with 1.1 seconds left in the half to give the Mount the two-point halftime advantage.
The Mount shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field in the opening half while RMU was held to 36.4 percent (12-of-33) shooting. Each team turned the ball over 13 times in the opening half with the Colonials holding a 20-15 edge on the boards.
Bresee led all scorers with 10 first-half points while Birkhead added seven for the Mountaineers. Forgues led Robert Morris with eight points in the half.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Sunday when they host Merrimack at noon at Knott Arena.
