EMMITSBURG, Md. (Feb. 16, 2020) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball heads to Staten Island in search of a sixth straight win and a season sweep of the Wagner Seahawks.
THE MATCHUP
The Mount holds the all-time series over Wagner 46-17. That includes a 78-63 victory in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener at Knott Arena on January 2nd. Jattarikah Settle finished with 15 points and came within two rebounds of a double-double.
At Spiro Sports Center, Mount is taken 20 of 30 meetings. Wagner defeated Mount 92-76 on Staten Island last season, despite five players scoring in double figures for the Mountaineers. The squad was outlasted by Taylah Simmons who scored 28 for the Seahawks.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
In last Saturday's win over the Red Flash, the Mount held the opponents to 44 points in the game and just three for the first quarter. The total is the second lowest for the team on the season, right behind conceding 40 points to Frostburg State.
Aryna Taylor put six shots in from downtown for a career-high 18 points. Settle finished with seven steals, also a career high. Taylor is the Mount's leading scorer off the bench with 7.5 points per game and Settle leads in steals with 53 swipes in 24 games.
The victory gave the Mountaineers' their longest win streak in six seasons. Back in 2013-14 the team won eight straight en route to a WNIT berth.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
Wagner is in the thick of fighting for one of the final spots in the NEC tournament. They are tied with Long Island for eighth place with a 4-8 conference showing, and have played .500 basketball following a 0-4 start. The Seahawks are also much more challenging at home, with seven victories on Grymes Hill compared to just one on the road.
Coming into the contest, Wagner has lost two straight, with Robert Morris and Merrimack holding them to a 39.5 points per game average.
Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava matched Settle's 15 points in the last meetings between the two sides. She continues to lead the Seahawks with 16.1 points and 5.7 rebounds a game.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's travels to NEC leader Robert Morris on Friday (Feb. 21) before returning home to face Merrimack Sunday (Feb. 23).
