Box Score 2 Buies Creek, N.C. (February 15, 2020)—The Mount St. Mary's softball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of losses at the Campbell Invitational on Saturday. The Mount fell to Bucknell, 5-0, in the opener before dropping a 9-2 game against host Campbell.
Bucknell used a strong pitching performance from Raeanne Geffert in the 5-0 win in the opening game on Saturday. Geffert struck out 16 batters while allowing two hits in the complete-game victory.
Kaylee Stoner and Kaia Bonshock provided the hits for the Mountaineers in the game. Starting pitcher Amanda Berkley allowed five runs (four earned) in five innings of work to take the loss. Jordan Weaver pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
The Bison took a 1-0 lead on a Ava Fairbanks RBI single in the second, and doubled the lead on a Taylor Wolfgang RBI double in the third. Lauren Lichtenwalner's two-run homer fourth broke the game open.
In the second game, Campbell scored six runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 9-2 victory over the Mountaineers. Maggie Kane had an RBI double and Bonshock an RBI single to pace the Mount offense in the contest.
Trailing 7-0 in the top of the sixth, the Mount scored twice for their first runs of the season. Stoner led off with a single, and Kane followed with a two-base hit to put the Mount on the scoreboard. Bonshock's one-out single plated Kane with the second run of the inning.
Weaver started for the Mount, allowing seven runs (six earned) in four innings. Avery Neuhart allowed a pair of unearned runs in two innings of work. Mariah Godde went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Mount offense.
The Mount is back in action tomorrow at the Campbell Invitational against Bucknell and Howard.
