Tiger Down! Mount Men's Lacrosse Grinds Out Win Over Towson on Saturday

TOWSON, Md. (Saturday, February 15th) – The Mount Men's lacrosse team took down Towson 11-10 at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday for the program's first-ever win over the Tigers. Kelly Gouin (3g), Brenden McCarthy (3g), and Matt Haggerty (4g) all finished with multi-goal games for the Mountaineers. Luke Frankeny added one goal and two assists while Dylan Furnback made 12 saves in net to secure the victory. 

After Towson took an early 2-0 lead, Frankeny would get the Mount on the board with his sixth goal of the season. McCarthy would follow that up with his first goal of the season to even this game at two. The Mountaineer train kept rolling as Gouin would net his first two collegiate goals to break the tie at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Haggerty put home his first of the season to give the Mountaineers a 5-3 lead heading to the second frame. The West Nyack, New York native would not stop there as his second goal of the game had the Mount up 6-3. The Tigers would go on a four-goal run in the second quarter to have a 7-6 advantage at the half.

Haggerty picked up where he left off in the first quarter to even the score at 7-7 to begin the second half. After falling behind 8-7, the Mountaineers would go on a four-goal run starting with Gouin finishing off his first career hat trick and McCarthy putting home two of his own for the hat trick. Haggerty capped the four consecutive Mount goals with his fourth of the day, which proved to be the game winner. 

The Mountaineer defense, led by Bryan McIntosh and Dylan Furnback, held the Tiger offense to only three goals in the second half forcing six turnovers. Furnback came up big with seven second-half saves including two in the final three minutes of the fourth to put Towson (0-2) away and give the Mount their first win of the 2020 season as well as their first ever win over Towson.

Sam Stephan won the X-battle for the second straight week going 14-for-24 on faceoffs and picking up seven groundballs. The Mount was excellent in the clearing game going 11-12 and their extra-man unit went 3-for-3 on the day.

Jon Mazza finished with four points (3g, 1a) while Brody McLean added two goals for the Tigers. Tyler Canto was pulled after allowing 11 goals and making only two saves in the loss. Jake Stout made two saves in relief. 

The Mount men's lacrosse team will next return home for their first game at Waldron Family Stadium of the 2020 season. Game time for Saturday, February 22's matchup against UMBC is set for 12:00 p.m.
