How Sweep It Is! Mount Women's Basketball Dismantles Long Island to Complete 4-0 Road Trip

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (February 10th, 2020) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team (14-9, 9-2 NEC) completed the sweep of their four-game road trip with a 77-57 victory over Long Island on Monday night. The win was backed by Rebecca Lee's career high in points with 23, while Michaela Harrison added 21 points of her own with five assists and two steals. Taylor Addison also finished in double figures with ten points, and Jatarrikah Settle produced four points with ten rebounds.

The opening quarter of this matchup was filled with offensive efficiency that led to an abundance of baskets. The two teams combined for a total of 43 points where the Mountaineers shot 69% from the field while the Sharks shot 53% as a team. Harrison and Lee combined for 17 of the Mount's 23 first quarter points to give them a three-point advantage after one.

Both teams slowed down offensively in the second quarter. The Mountaineers buckled down on defense to hold Long Island to only nine points in the second frame. A Harrison three right before the half capped a 7-0 Mountaineer run to put them up by ten at the end of the first half. At the break, the Mount held a 20-12 rebounding advantage and a 24-12 edge in points in the paint. 

The second half was all-Mountaineers for twenty straight minutes. The Mount built a 50-33 lead midway through the third quarter using a 9-0 scoring run and holding the Shark offense to only four points. The Mountaineers would eventually take a 62-42 lead heading into the final quarter of basketball.

The Mount women's basketball team would go on to defeat Long Island 77-57 to complete a season sweep of the Sharks and a sweep of their four-game road trip. The Mountaineers led for 38:00 of 40:00 and held a 48-22 advantage in the part, largely in part of Lee's 23-point performance.

Long Island's (5-17, 4-7 NEC) Brandy Thomas (16 points), Jeyhad Johnson (13 points), and Kiara Bell (10 points) all finished in double figures. The Mountaineers have now swept the season series over the Sharks, winning both games by 18-plus points.

The Mount women's basketball's long-awaited return home will be Saturday, February 15th versus Saint Francis U. The Red Flash are right behind the Mountaineers in the NEC standings.
