EMMITSBURG, Md. (Jan. 19, 2020) – The Mountaineers are again seeking their best conference start in 20 years as they host the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers Monday at Knott Arena. A 5-1 record would be the team's best since the 1999-2000 season, when they went 7-0 to begin Northeast Conference (NEC) play on their way to a 20-9 (14-4) campaign.
THE MATCHUP
St. Francis Brooklyn is one of Mount's oldest conference rivalries, with meetings going back to 1990. The Mountaineers also have the best winning percentage against the Terriers for any NEC squad, with a mark of 53-8. Every single game from 1990 to 2008 went to the Mount - a whopping 36 contests.
In 2018-19, the Mount won two out of three, including an upset of the Terriers during the NEC quarterfinals.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Mount St. Mary's stands in third place in the NEC with their 4-1 conference record, trailing Robert Morris (5-0) and Saint Francis U (5-1).
For the fifth time this season the Mountaineers successfully converted more than half their shot attempts in a 72-64 win over Central Connecticut this past Saturday. The Mount also went 7-for-14 from long distance, their best mark since shooting 58 percent against Towson on November 24, 2018. Taylor Addison earned a career-best in points with 12. Kayla Agentowicz registered the same total, which will serve as a season high.
The Mount is back on top in the conference in terms of field goal percentage, shooting .398 for the year. They have remained one of the top offenses in the conference throughout, ranking second in score (67.1) and fourth in three pointers (.323) and foul shots (.734).
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
The Terriers are struggling to repeat their 12-6 NEC mark from a season ago, starting 2019-2020 with a 1-4 start. They come to Emmitsburg looking to stymie a three-game losing streak with defeats to Saint Francis U, Robert Morris and Wagner.
Senior Jade Johnson is St. Francis Brooklyn's top scorer with 16.7 points per game, but rookie Nevena Dimitrijevic is their best all-around player. The Serbian averages 14.4 points and 4.4 rebounds while leading the Terriers in assists with 6.4 and two steals. Junior Ally Lassen also averages 14.4 points and leads the team in rebounds with 6.2 boards a contest.
LOOKING AHEAD
Monday's contest is two of a three-game homestand. The team will play Bryant Saturday (Jan. 25) for Winter Homecoming.
