EMMITSBURG, Md. (Jan. 1, 2020) – After an almost two week long hiatus, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball returns to the floor as they begin Northeast Conference (NEC) play, hosting the Wagner Seahawks.
THE MATCHUP
Wagner is Mount St. Mary's third-most frequent opponent with 62 previous meetings. The Mountaineers have a griphold on the series, leading the Seahawks 45-17 in the series. The 45 victories include a 15 game winning streak from 2011 to 2018 and a 10 game streak from 1992 to 1996. Nearly every meeting has taken place since the Mount joined the NEC in 1988.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Mount St. Mary's finished 5-7 in their non-conference matchup. That part of the schedule culminated in the Anne Donovan Classic, hosted by Old Dominion. The Mountaineers defeated Richmond 75-67, but fell in contests to Hampton and host ODU. Along with the win over Richmond, highlight wins so far include victories over reigning Big South champion Radford and rival Loyola.
Jatarrikah Settle was instrumental in the win against the Spiders, contributing a career-best 26 points along with 14 rebounds. It's the first double-double for the junior this season and the fifth of her career.
Kendall Bresee continues to lead the Mount in points per game (11.2), rebounds per game (7.3) and assists per game (3.4). Settle (11.0) and Michaela Harrison (10.0) also average double figures in scoring, with Harrison leading in steals with two per game. Junior Rebecca Lee is averaging 1.3 blocks to lead the team.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
Wagner has been experiencing a resurgence, led by fourth-year head coach Heather Jacobs. After languishing at the bottom of the NEC standings for several seasons, the Seahawks finished right behind the Mount last year to earn their first conference tournament berth since 2014.
Like the Mountaineers, the Seahawks boasts three double-digit scorers, led by Emilija Krista Grava with 16 per contest. Krista Grava's 45 points against Saint Peter's is far and away the highest total in the NEC this season. Khealah Edwards also earns double-digits with 13.1 and leads Wagner with 6.6 rebounds a game. The third player is Alex Cowan, sister of Maryland's Anthony Cowan. The St. John's College High School product is averaging 13.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in her freshman year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Thursday's game is the first of two contests at home to open the NEC portion of the schedule. On Saturday (Jan. 4) the Mount will welcome the Long Island Sharks for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
