Mount Baseball Ends 2019 Season With A 8-6 Loss At Penn State On Tuesday

University Park, Pa. (May 14, 2019) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team ended the 2019 season with an 8-6 loss at Penn State on Tuesday night. Junior Jared Urban led the Mount offense after he went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, a stolen base, and a home run.

Patrick Causa (21) and Thomas Bramley (9) each tabbed multi-hit games for the Mountaineers while Causa picked up his 12th double of the year. Pat Daly finished the season tied for second in home runs after he hit a two-run homer in the loss. Alex Kriss notched his team leading 16th double of the year. Thomas Savastio, Zack Costello, and Trevor Leamer added the other three hits for Mount St. Mary's in the loss. Trey McGough started the game for the Mount and pitched 2.1 dominant shutout innings while struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Dennis Snyder finished the game for the Mountaineers, threw 2.1 scoreless frames in relief, and struck out two.

Trailing by one run, 6-5, headed into the bottom of the sixth, the Nittany Lions (22-24) plated three runs that gave them an 8-6 lead while Jared Frielich and Kyle Virbitsky combined to shut down Mount St. Mary's (15-35) the rest of the ballgame. Jordan Bowersox hit a two RBI single and Ryan Sloniger hit a RBI single.

The Mount and Penn State were all tied up at 1-1 before the two teams combined for nine runs scored in the fifth inning. The Mountaineers plated five runs in the top half of the inning before the Nittany Lions pushed four runs of their own across the board in the bottom of the inning that made it a 6-5 Mount St. Mary's advantage. The first run of the game came in the top of the second after Zack Costello scored on a wild pitch before Mason Nadeau evened the ballgame in the bottom of the third with a RBI single through the right side.

The Mount's five runs in the top of the fifth came off of a two-run home run off the bat of Pat Daly and a three-run home run off the bat of Jared Urban. Patrick Causa set up the first homer after he doubled to lead off the inning. Thomas Savastio hit a single to left field and Zack Costello was hit by a pitch that set up the second home run of the inning.

The Penn State runs were highlighted by a solo home run from Shea Sbranti, and a three-run homer from Mason Nadeau.

Mason Nadeau and Jordan Bowersox led the Nittany Lions after they combined for six RBI, five hits, two runs scored, and a home run. Shea Sbranti added a 2-for3 night with two runs scored, one run batted in, and a home run. Jared Frielich and Kyle Virbitsky combined for four scoreless innings pitched with three k's. 

Jared Frielich (2-1) recorded the win for Penn State while Kyle Virbitsky (4) earned his fourth save of the year and Cole Reeder (2-2) picked up the loss for the Mount.
