Mount Bats Plate Nine Runs In Series Finale Win At LIU Brooklyn On Sunday

Brooklyn, N.Y. (April 7, 2019) - The Mount St. Mary's bats put up nine runs to win the series finale 9-5 at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Mount grabbed a big Northeast Conference series win on the road that moved their conference record to 5-4. 

Owen Wosleger, Patrick Causa, Thomas Savastio, and Sebastian Mieses each recorded multi-hit games to lead the Mountaineers offense. Causa and Savastio combined for five RBI, five runs scored, a double, and a home run in the clean-up and fifth spot in the lineup. Mount St. Mary's pitching, Jordan Geber, Noah Smith, Andrew Dameron, and Dennis Snyder only allowed three earned runs in the win. 

The Mountaineers (11-19, 5-4 NEC) grabbed the early 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning before LIU Brooklyn (10-18, 3-6 NEC) evened the ballgame up at 4-4 after they plated four runs in the bottom half of the third. The Mount pushed the first two runs of the game on the board in the top of the first and added two more in the top of the third. With one out in the top of the first, Owen Wosleger hit a double down the left field line and was later plated off of a Patrick Causa RBI single to center field and Causa advanced to second on the throw. Causa scored after Thomas Savastio singled through the right side of the infield for the Mountaineers' second run of the inning.

In the top of the third frame, Owen Wosleger forced a walk and with two outs, was brought home to score after Patrick Causa hit his team leading seventh home run of the year. The Blackbirds plated four runs in the third that tied the game at four runs a piece after three innings of play. Rob Griswold doubled to lead off the inning and was brought home off of a RBI single from Gregory Vaughn. The rest of the LIU scoring in the inning came from a RBI double off the bat of Brock Hallum, and two fielder's choices later in the inning that brought home Hallum and Tim Bechtold.

Mount St. Mary's scored four more runs in the fifth inning and added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth frame. The Mountaineers held the Blackbirds to just one run the rest of the game to preserve the win. In the fifth, Sebastian Mieses led off the inning with a single to right center and was plated in the next at bat after Myles Nicholson hit a RBI double down the left field line. Nicholson was plated off of a sacrifice fly RBI to center field off the bat of Alex Kriss. Later in the frame, Zack Costello brought the last two runs of the inning home after he hit a two RBI single through the right side that scored Patrick Causa and Thomas Savastio on the play.

In the top of the ninth with one out, Patrick Causa forced a five pitch walk and was brought home to score in the next at bat after Thomas Savastio hit a RBI double to left center field for his second RBI of the day.

Rob Griswold led the LIU offense with a 4-for-4 day in the number two spot in the lineup while Tim Bechtold recorded two runs batted in on the day. 

Noah Smith (2-1) pitched three innings for the Mount in the win while he only allowed one run on for hits. Dennis Snyder (4) pitched two shutout innings to pick up his second save in the last two games and his fourth save of the season. Nick Torres (2-3) tabbed the loss for the Blackbirds after he allowed six earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. 

The Mountaineers hosts a mid-week game against Navy on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 PM.
