Late Rally In Extra Innings Pushes Wagner Past Mount St. Mary's 8-4 On Thursday

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 18, 2019) - Late rally in extra innings pushed Wagner past the Mount St. Mary's baseball team 8-4 on Thursday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. Junior Trey McGough and redshirt junior Michael Kuypers combined to pitch 11 dominant innings while only giving up one earned run each in the loss. 

Owen Wosleger led the Mount offense with a multi-hit game and two runs scored, two stolen bases, and a double. Patrick Causa, Zack Costello, and Pat Daly recorded the only runs batted in of the game for the Mountaineers while Myles Nicholson tabbed his third triple of the season.

Locked in a pitcher's duel, Mount St. Mary's and the Seahawks were both scoreless after four innings of play before Wagner plated one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth that made it a 2-0 game. In the fifth, Johnny Kampes reached base on a fielder's choice that plated Tyler Sanfillippo for the first run of the game. Sanfillippo scored the second run of the game after he hit a RBI single through the left side that brought home Joe Silverstrone to cross the plate.

In the bottom half of the sixth, the Mountaineers pushed their first run of the game a crossed the board and added their second run in the bottom of the seventh that evened the game back up at two a piece after seven frames of play. Owen Wosleger worked a walk in the sixth with one out and stole second base. Wosleger advanced to third off of a groundout from Thomas Savastio and scored off of Patrick Causa's RBI single through the left side for the first run of the game for Mount St. Mary's. In the seventh, Alex Kriss singled down the left field line off of a rocket that jumped off the bat and hit the left field wall. Kriss was plated later in the inning after Pat Daly hit a RBI single to left field.

The Mount and the Seahawks headed into extra innings all tied up at 3-3 after nine innings of play after both teams traded runs in the eighth and shut each other down in the ninth. In the top half of the eighth, Silverstrone plated the third run of the game for Wagner after he hit a RBI single through the left side of the infield that brought Anthony Pecora home. For the Mountaineers in the bottom of the eighth, Wosleger doubled down the right field line and later in the frame, scored off of a RBI single to second base from Zack Costello.

After two scoreless frames of play, the Seahawks exploded to push five runs a crossed the board in the top of the 12th and held Mount St. Mary's to just one run in the bottom half of the 12th to preserve the series opener win. Johnny Kampes started the scoring in the 12th for Wagner after he drove a 0-2 hanging curveball over the left field wall for a solo home run. The rest of the runs were highlighted by a RBI single from Sanfillippo and a two RBI single from Emil Matti.

Tyler Sanfillippo and Emil Matti led the Seahawks offense with two hits and two runs batted in each. Joe Silverstrone added three hits and two runs scored in the win. Eric Ligda started and pitched a solid 6.1 innings while he only allowed two earned runs and struck out two batters. 

In the bottom of the 12th after Myles Nicholson ripped a triple to left center field with two outs, Owen Wosleger reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman that plated Nicholson on the play for the Mount.

Nick Robino (2-1) recorded the win after he pitched a hitless two innings of work for Wagner and Dennis Snyder (0-4) tabbed the loss for the Mountaineers.

The two teams will play the second game of the series tomorrow, April 19 at 11:00 AM.
