Mount Women Stunned by Lehigh at the Buzzer

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. (Dec. 8, 2019) - With 30 seconds left and a six point lead, the Mount St. Mary's Women's Basketball team was poised for a victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sunday. But the visitors from Bethlehem stormed back and with 0.1 seconds left, Lehigh's Megan Walker drilled a three to stun the Mountaineers, 66-65, at Knott Arena.

Kendall Bresee earned her second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and came within three assists of a triple-double. Michaela Harrison tied Bresee with a team-high 17 points, and Rebecca Lee contributed a 13 point, seven rebound effort.

Lehigh (7-2) was led by Camyrn Buhr with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Mary Cloughtery added 11 points and Walker's game winner put her in double figures with 10.

Mount (4-4) got off to a fast start, capped off by a pair of back-to-back triples from Harrison that gave the Mount to 11-7 edge. The lead continued to build in spite of foul trouble. Harrison finished 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and a Bresee steal and jumper at the horn gave the Mountaineers a nine point lead after the opening frame.

The home side maintained their advantage until the midpoint of the second quarter. A Bridget Birkhead three made it 31-23, but that would be the last points Mount would score in the half. Lehigh buckled down on defense, and finished off a 9-0 run when they had the ball. The Mountain Hawks led 32-31 at the break, and the seven points are the fewest the Mountaineers have scored in a quarter all season.

Scoring continued to elude the Mount into the third quarter. They were held off the scoreboard until free throws by Taylor Addison at the 7:12 mark.  But the defense kept hope alive, holding the Mountain Hawks to eight points during the first five minutes. A field goal by Lee finally ended the drought from the floor with 1:12 to go, and thanks to free throws helping the cause, Mount trailed by two points entering the final frame.

The Mountaineers surged to deadlock the game early in the fourth quarter. Birkhead hit a clutch three and Bresee followed with a layup to make it 50-49 - Mount's first lead since the second quarter. The lead swapped back-and-forth until Bresee made a layup with 2:49 to go. Harrison went on a tear, rattling off a pair of quick three for a seven point lead that looked insurmountable.

Down by five with 30 seconds reamining, Lehigh had to resort to fouling. Mount hit their free throws, but Walker and Clougherty buried triples to halve the deficit. Full court pressure forced a Mount turnover and the subsequent Lehigh layup brought it down to one. The Mountain Hawks fouled Birkhead, who converted one of two at the line. Needing a two to tie and three to win, Lehigh put the ball in Walker's hands. She almost lost control, but with the Mountaineers unable to pounce on the ball, she regained her composure and sank the game winner from the wing.

Mount St. Mary's travels to the Delmarva Peninsula for a contest with Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday (Dec. 14).
