Box Score PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Dec. 14, 2019) - Trailing by 17 points and seemingly left in the dust, the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team ignited a furious comeback that took Saturday's contest with Maryland Eastern Shore to the wire. But a last second shot from the Hawks' Porsha Sydnor banked in and sent the home crowd happy with a 78-76 win.
Mount (4-5) was led by Bridget Birkhead, who tied the all-time record with eight three pointers made, earning a career-high 26 points. It's the fifth time in history the feat had been accomplished - most recently by Michaela Harrison last season. Jatarrikah Settle and Delaney Connors also reached double figures in points, with 12 and 11, respectively. Connors' point total shattered her previous career high of four. The 33 points scored in the fourth quarter is the highest for the Mount this season.
Taylor Addison led in rebounding with seven, followed by Settle's six and Birkhead's five. Birkhead also led with five assists and four steals.
Maryland Eastern Shore (3-7) received 25 points from Amanda Carney and an 18 point, nine rebound showing from Kenetria Redfern.
The Mount fell behind early as the team was cold shooting from the floor. Only Birkhead could find the bottom of the net, scoring the first nine points. A quick 5-0 run cut the deficit to eight after the opening 10. The second quarter was the most defensive, and the Hawks extended their lead to 11 at half.
Midway through the third quarter, Mount fell behind as much as 17, and their shooting percentage rivaled some of their lowest totals this year. Over the next five minutes, they were able to trim the deficit back to 13 to set up a fourth quarter fury.
Birkhead once again provided the spark, unleashing a pair of quick trigger treys in the first 30 seconds. Connors followed with a three to cut the score down to 60-53. After Birkhead hit her seventh three of the game, Harrison finally broke her own scoring drought with two foul shots and a three. In just over a quarter's worth of play, Mount St. Mary's had climbed back from 17 down to one possession.
But the Hawks remained undeterred, as Carney found herself open and scored a three to work the lead back to 67-62. Kendall Bresee added a pair of triples to keep Mount in the game but fouls helped the Hawks keep their advantage via the free throw. With one minute left, Eastern Shore led 76-71.
Harrison got a steal and fast break layup to cut it back down to three and after the Mountaineers got a stop, Birkhead once again buried a three that tied the game at 76 all. With the shot clock turned off, the Hawks held to the final moments. Sydnor found a bit of light in the paint and the shot banked in off the glass with 1.5 seconds to go.
With one last opportunity, Addison managed to get a clean look in the lane, but the potential game-tying shot rattled out.
The Mount returns to the floor with the Anne Donovan Classic in Norfolk, Va. Games begin with Hampton Thursday (Dec. 19).
