EMMITSBURG, Md. (Nov. 19, 2019) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball will challenge the UMBC Retrievers in their third consecutive contest against a fellow Maryland school. The Mount is seeking to stay undefeated at home and earn its first Division I victory of the season.
THE MATCHUP
Wednesday's game will be the 39th meeting between the Mountaineers and Retrievers. Mount holds a 29-9 advantage in the series, mostly earned via a 24-2 run from 1976-2000. The series has leveled out in the 21st Century as UMBC has taken six of the past 11 meetings. Home court has been favorable to the Mountaineers as well, who are 16-2 against the Retrievers in Emmitsburg. Both teams were members of the Northeast Conference (NEC) from 1999 to 2003, and across 10 matchups, the Mountaineers went 6-4.
The teams met last season, with the Mount winning 65-52 in Catonsville. Juliette Lawless led with 17 points, and the Mountaineers received double figure efforts from Rebecca Lee, Daly Sullivan and Jatarrikah Settle.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
The Mountaineers (1-3) are looking to bounce back following a 73-57 defeat at the hands of the Towson Tigers. It was the most points the team has conceded so far on defense, coupled with a scoring percentage of 28.3% on offense. Kendall Bresee led the team with 15 points, and leads the season average at 11.5 PPG. Bridget Birkhead and Taylor Addison reached double figures in the scoring department, and Rebecca Lee had her best game of the year with nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
UMBC (2-2) is under the tutelage of first-year head coach Johnetta Hayes. The Retrievers have largely stayed close to home in the early goings of 2019-20, with victories over Gettysburg and Coppin State. Mount will be the second NEC team that UMBC will face, following a 67-60 defeat against Wagner this past Saturday (Nov. 16). Efficient on offense with a 47.1% shooting percentage, the Retrievers are led by Te'yJah Oliver with 21 points per contest.
LOOKING AHEAD
The matchup with UMBC kicks off three of four games at Knott Arena for the Mount. After traveling to Radford Tuesday (Nov. 26) and a Thanksgiving hiatus, the Mountaineers will host Loyola (Dec. 6) and Lehigh (Dec. 8).
