Box Score Smithfield, R.I. (January 7, 2017) – The Mount St. Mary's University women's basketball team wasn't able to carry over momentum from its first conference win last time out as the Mountaineers suffered a 78-62 setback at Bryant on Saturday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.
Caroline Hummell dropped a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds for her ninth double-figure scoring day of the season. The junior center went 3-for-9 from the field but made up for it with a 9-for-10 day from the foul line. Katrice Dickson helped pace the Mount with 14 points, a team-high four assists and two rebounds in the tilt.
Morgan Olander and Haley Connors registered 15 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs, while leading scorer Alex Klein added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Mount shot over 40-percent for the second straight contest, going 22-for-53 (41.5-percent) from the field, while posting its second-best percentage of the season from three-point land (45-percent). Bryant shot 49.1-percent from the floor and 41.2-percent from long range.
The Mount took its largest lead of the contest in the final minute of the opening quarter as Kayla Agentowicz knocked down a pair of three-pointers and Kathleen Belanger-Finn hit a layup to put the Mount up by four, 20-16. Connors responded with a deep three in the final seconds to trim the Mount's lead to 20-19 heading into the second.
Bryant opened the second period on a 11-0 run to jump out in front, 30-20, but the Mount battled back over the next three minutes with a 10-2 run of its own to cut the deficit to 32-30 with 2:35 remaining in the half. Mikal Johnson ignited the rally with consecutive three-pointers, and Dickson and Alexis Carter followed with buckets to bring the Mountaineers within a pair.
The Bulldogs held the Mount off the board in the last 2:35 and scored the final seven points of the half to push their advantage to 39-30 at the break.
Bryant built its lead to as many as 13 midway through the third frame, but the Mount fought back once again and cut the deficit to eight, 55-47, in the final minute following a jumper from Carter.
Hummell converted a pair of free throws to open the fourth period and Carter followed with another jumper to bring the Mount within four, 55-51, at the 8:57 mark.
Just over a minute and a half later, Bryant began a 12-4 run that would help the Bulldogs start to pull away from the Mount. Klein and Connors combined for seven of the team's 12 points during the stretch as Bryant extended its lead to 71-58 with under two minutes to play.
The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Mount in the final minutes to walk away with the 78-62 victory to improve to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league play. Following the loss, the Mount fell to 3-11 on the year and 1-2 in the NEC.
