Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (May 7, 2016)—Mount St. Mary's junior Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) capped off her terrific season in story book fashion with a walk-off two-run home run to lift the Mount to a 4-3 victory and a sweep of its Northeast Conference doubleheader against Wagner at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Saturday. Mount St. Mary's won the opening game, 6-1.
Heinze's walk-off homer gives her 26 career home runs at the Mount, breaking the school's career home run record of 25 set by Liz Christiansen (2009-13). Heinze finishes the year with 19 home runs, smashing the Mount's single-season mark of 11 home runs set by Christiansen in 2010.
In addition, Heinze also regained the lead in the NEC home run chase. Her 19 homers are an NEC single-season record, and she leads Saint Francis University's Jordan Seneca by one home run. The Mount's season is complete while the Red Flash will be competing in the NEC Championships next week.
Wagner (20-27, 4-10 NEC) rallied with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead in the second game of the doubleheader, setting the stage for Heinze's heroics. With one out, Jessica Greenewald (Morrisville, Pa.) worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch to set the table. Heinze then drilled a 3-0 pitch over the center field fence for her second walk-off home run of the season.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the game on a Lauren Serrato RBI single in the top of the third inning. The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Mount's Holly Buckel (Finksburg, Md.) cracked a go-ahead two-run home run. It was Buckel's seventh home run of the season.
Heinze went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI for the Mount in the win while Greenewald went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Marian Ruf (Mesa, Ariz.) allowed one run and four hits in four innings of work, while Katie Olson (Ramsey, N.J.) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in three innings of relief.
In the opening game, Buckel's two-run double capped a three-run first inning to help propel the Mount to a 6-1 victory.
After Wagner scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Mount answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Marisa Mayes (Mesa, Ariz.) reached on an error with Greenewald and Heinze following with singles to load the bases. Mayes scampered home on a wild pitch, and Lindsay Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) walked to load the bases again. Buckel followed with a two-run double off the fence in left-center field to give the Mount the lead.
The Mountaineers (15-35, 6-10 NEC) added a run in the third when Heinze doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Buckel squeeze bunt. Heinze then drilled a long home run to right in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 5-1, and Shea McFarland's (Huntingtown, Md.) RBI groundout in the sixth scored Rachel Gavigan (Vineland, N.J.) to make it a five-run game.
Heinze went 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored while Buckel went 1-or-2 with three RBI in the game. Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) scattered seven hits while stranding 12 base-runners in a complete-game victory. Lichtner struck out three while allowing an unearned run for her sixth win of the season.
GAME NOTES: The Mount finished the season 11-5 at home this year…The Mountaineers posted a sweep of Wager for the second consecutive season…Wagner, though, holds a 34-13 lead in the all-time series.
