Mount Softball Hosts Sacred Heart on Sunday for StrikeOut Cancer Game

The Mount St. Mary's University softball team will host its annual StrikeOut Cancer game on Sunday, April 10, when the Mount welcomes Sacred Heart to Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  The doubleheader begins at 12:00 p.m.

StrikeOut Cancer is a program run through the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, raising awareness and money in the fight against cancer.

There will be a 50-50 raffle while the Mount softball team will also be selling T-Shirts for $12.00.  Proceeds from the game will benefit Breast Cancer Research.

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mountaineers fell at Georgetown, 16-10, on Wednesday in a high-scoring affair.  Holly Buckel went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while Rachel Heinze went 2-for-5, including her Northeast Conference leading 14th home run of the season.  The Hoyas scored eight times in the bottom of the first, and led 11-2 after three innings.  The Mount was able to rally, cutting the deficit to 13-10 in the sixth before the Hoyas scored three times in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

ABOUT SACRED HEART:  Sacred Heart lost to Fairfield, 2-0, on Wednesday to fall to 9-19 on the year.  The Pioneers split their NEC opening doubleheader against Bryant last Sunday.  Kelyn Fillmore leads the team with a .300 average.  Emily Orosco (4-3, 2.10 ERA) and Jamie Carlson (3-9, 3.38 ERA) are the top two pitchers.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Sacred Heart holds a 22-15 lead in the all-time series that began in 1986.  Last year, the teams split a doubleheader with the Mount taking a 3-1win in game one before falling 3-0 in the second game.  Moun tSt. Mary's has won five of the past six meetings against the Pioneers.  Neither team has scored more than three runs in a game in teh series since 2012.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP: The Mount closed out the 2015 season with a road doublehader at Sacred Heart.   The Mount won game one, 3-1, and fell by a 3-0 final score in the nightcap. Rachel Heinze finished with three hits to lead the Mount's offense in the twinbill. FULL RECAP.

HOME RUN WATCH:  Junior outfielder Rachel Heinze belted a solo home run in the sixth inning in the Mount's 16-10 loss at Georgetown on Wednesday, giving her a team-leading 14 home runs this season.  Heinze, who has already broken the Mount's single-season record of 11 home runs set by Liz Christiansen in 2010, is two homers shy of the NEC single-season mark (Andrea Lazzari, 2011).  In addition, Heinze is now four homers shy of Christiansen's all-time Mount record of 25 home runs.

MORE ON HEINZE:  Rachel Heinze is hitting .326 with 14 home runs and 28 RBI this season.  The junior is 15th in the nation with a .870 slugging percentage as 21 of her 30 hits this year have been for extra bases. 

BUCKEL CATCHING FIRE:  Holly Buckel went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI in the Mount's loss at Georgetown.  The senior catcher is hitting .481 (13-for-27) with three home runs and 10 RBI over the past nine games.  Buckel is second on the team with a .333 average and four home runs this season.

MAYES LEADS TEAM IN HITTING:  Senior second baseman Marisa Mayes leads the Mount with a .361 average this year.  She is hitting .432 (19-for-44) over the past 16 games with two doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 runs scored.  She has seven multiple-hit games this year, and had a 10-game hit streak earlier this season.

OFFENSE SHINES:  The Mountaineers are hitting .302 this season as a team with eight players in the lineup hitting .271 or better this year.   The Mount is tied with Saint Francis U for the top spot in the NEC in team batting with the .302 average.  The Mountaineers have 23 homers this year, with seven different players connecting for a home run.  The Mount is hitting .322 over the past 16 games, averaging 5.38 runs per game.

SCHEDULE CHANGE:  Due to the impending inclement weather, the Mount's home doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 9, has been postponed.  The teams will makeup the twinbill on Saturday, May 7, at 1 pm.

UP NEXT:  The Mount hosts Howard on Tuesday, April 12, at 3 pm, for two games at Our lady of the Meadows Field.
