Box Score Washington, D.C. (April 6, 2016)—The Mount St. Mary's University softball team fell to Georgetown16-10, in a high-scoring midweek non-conference matchup on Wednesday. Holly Buckel went 3-for4 with a home run and four RBI to pace the Mountaineers in the game.
The Hoyas (7-23) started fast, scoring eight times in the bottom of the first to take an 8-0 advantage. Georgetown loaded the bases, and Sarah Bennett singled home all three runs for a 3-0 lead. Taylor Henry added a two-run double and Mallory Belknap a two-run triple in the inning as well.
The Mount (6-24) got a pair of runs back in the top of the second. Marisa Mayes was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Rachel Gavigan double. With two outs, Buckel came through with a two-run double to right center to put the Mount on the scoreboard.
The Hoyas built the lead to 11-2 with three runs in the bottom of the third, but the Mountaineers responded with five runs in the top of the fourth to get back into the game. Buckel launced a solo home run, her fourth of the season, with one out to start the rally. Jessica Greenewald then reached on an error, and Shea McFarland laced a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third. Linsday Heinze walked to load the bases, and Mayes was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Gavigan added a two-run single to right to make the score 11-6, and Marian Ruf's RBI single to left drove in the Mount's fifth run of the frame.
Georgetown added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 13-7, but the Mount answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 13-10. Rachel Heinze belted a solo home run to start the rally. Heinze now has a Northeast Conference leading 14 home runs, just two shy of matching the NEC single-season record. Lindsay Heinze singled, and Mayes and Gavigan each walked to load the bases. After a pair of outs, Buckel singled to short to drive in her fourth run of the game, and Greenewald walked to force home Gavigan to cut the deficit to 13-10.
Samantha Giovaniello hit a two-run double and Bennett added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give Georgetown a 16-10 advantage. Both Giovaniello and Bennett finished the game with five RBI.
Buckel went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI while Gavigan finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI. Rachel Heinze was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run with McFarland chipping in a pair of hits as well.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Saturday, April 9, with a 1:00 p.m., with a Northeast Conference doubleheader at home against Wagner. That game is part of the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Strikeout Cancer program.
