MOUNT UPDATE: The Mountaineers are coming off a pair of one-run losses to Fairleigh Dickinson in the Northeast Conference opening doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game, Rachel Heinze hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give the Mount a 5-3 advantage, but the Knights were able to rally with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to earn the 6-5 win. Heinze added a solo homer in game two, but the Mount fell by the score of 2-1. After opening the season with an 0-14 record, the Mount is 6-9 over its past 15 games, hitting .321 while averaging 5.1 runs per game.
ABOUT THE HOYAS: Georgetown dropped both games of a Big East doubleheader at DePaul on Sunday to fall to 6-23 overall and 1-4 in the Big East. The Hoyas have dropped 12 of their past 13 games. Samantha Giovanniello leads the team with a .369 average, six home runs and 27 RBI on the year. Grace Appelbe is hitting .333 while Sarah Bennett has four home runs and 22 RBI. Giovanniello is the top pitcher, going 5-15 with a 6.21 ERA in 107.0 innings pitched.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: This will be the first meeting between the Mount and Georgetown since March 18, 2012. The Mount holds a 6-3 lead in the series, but the Hoyas have won the past three games between the two teams. The Mount is 0-1 all-time on the road against Georgetown, falling 7-3 on March 15, 2008.
HEINZE BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON HOME RUN RECORD: Rachel Heinze hit a pair of home runs in the Mount's doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. The two long balls give Heinze 13 home runs this season, breaking the Mount's single-season record of 11 that was set by Liz Christiansen in 2010. Heinze is currently seventh in the nation with 0.45 home runs per game, and is tied for 10th with her 13 homers. She is just three home runs shy of tying the NEC single-season record of 16 set by Andrea Lazzari of Wagner in 2009. She has 20 career home runs for the Mountaineers, five behind all-time leader Christiansen, who hit 25 during her Mount career.
MAYES HEATING UP AT PLATE: Marisa Mayes leads the Mount and is third in the Northeast Conference with a .366 average this season. Mayes has posted six multiple-hit games over the past eight contests, and she is hitting .442 (19-for-42) over the past 13 games. She hit her second career home run in the Mount's 6-5 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
UP NEXT: The Mountaineers host a pair of Northeast Conference doubleheaders this weekend. The Mount will face Wagner on Saturday at 1 pm before welcoming Sacred Heart for a pair of games on Sunday at noon.
