Box Score 2 Newark, Del. (April 27, 2016)—The Mount St. Mary's University softball team dropped two games at Delaware on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers were edged, 3-2, in the second game after falling in the opener, 8-2.
Game 1: Delaware 8, Mount St. Mary's 2
In the opening game, the Mount took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Marisa Mayes led off with a single to left, and after a fielder's choice, Rachel Heinze walked to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Holly Buckel then doubled a ball to right center to plate both runners to give the Mount a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hens (28-17) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Mariah Kondravy's RBI single plated the first run of the game for Delaware, while Shelby Jones tied the game with an RBI double. RBI singles by Gabby Klecko and Kondravy in the bottom of the second pushed the lead to 4-2, and four unearned runs in the third gave the Blue Hens an 8-2 advantage.
Mayes went 2-for-4 at the plate to pace the Mount in the game while Sam Lichtner threw a complete-game, allowing just two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts in six innings of work.
Game 2: Delaware 3, Mount St. Mary's 2
Mount St. Mary's saw its seventh-inning rally come up just short in a 3-2 loss in the second game of the doubleheader.
Trailing 3-1 heading to the top of the seventh, the Mountaineers (12-34) rallied, loading the bases with two outs. Marian Ruf, Shea McFarland and Emilee Kirk recorded consecutive one-out singles to load the bases. After a flyout, Greenewald came through with an RBI single to center field to make it a one-run game, bringing Rachel Heinze to the plate. Delaware pitcher ended the threat by striking Heinze out on a 2-2 pitch to preserve the win.
Delaware scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 advantage before the Mount cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth. Greenewald walked and moved to third on a Rachel Heinze two-base hit. Lindsay Heinze then brought Greenewald home with an RBI groundout to second.
The Blue Hens got an insurance run on a Mount error in the fifth to make it a 3-1 game before the Mount's rally in the seventh.
Greenewald went 2-for-3 with a run scored while McFarland also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game. Katie Olson allowed two earned runs in a complete-game effort in the circle.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, April 30, with 1:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Robert Morris.
